Hair gone wrong (with pics!)

Hello
I’m after some advice! I keep on going to hairdressers asking for something similar to the attached professional photo. I stress that I don’t want to have just blonde stripes as it ends up looking orange. This is what they did yesterday. Am I just asking for the wrong thing? Am I right in thinking my hair now just looks stripey and brassy?

The original version looks like she has a root smudge and a balayage whereas your looks like foil highlights. Check out the instagram accounts of your local hairdressers and find one that's done a few like what you like then use those pictures to guide it.

Happyharry2003 · 10/07/2021 12:42

Thanks. That’s what I asked for but she said she wouldn’t do the root smudge as there was enough of my natural brown and therefore i didn’t need it?

And how do I avoid them always making it brassy and orange?

They appear to have done both a different colour tone: gold rather than ash and a different dye method: highlights rather than balayage. I don't really understand how they got there from that photo.

Happyharry2003 · 10/07/2021 12:45

I also really don’t want to go to work with it this orange and striped on Monday. I have no choice other than to box for it brown do i :-(

Also, when you say you 'keep' asking, I think that's a sign that you need to change hairdressers. The communication is not working here and you're paying for a service you just aren't getting.

Bumblebee413 · 10/07/2021 12:47

It doesn't look bad, it just isn't what you were hoping for. Sometimes pinning up can help disguise stripes x

MilduraS · 10/07/2021 12:49

Don't use box dye! Unless your hair grows really fast and you're happy to wait for it to grow out before trying again. I think the hairdresser just isn't a brilliant colourist and that sort of style takes a lot of skill despite looking effortless. From the colour I can see, your roots were much lighter than the example photo so if you were willing to pay for the root smudge I'm not sure why she wouldn't.

Happyharry2003 · 10/07/2021 12:50

Thank you. It was a new hairdressers and I left the old one as they did this a couple of times as well! I probably need to make myself even more clear but I thought it was clear in the photo. It looks worse pinned up as you really can see the stripes then. I will just have to wack a box die on :-(

I don’t want to go back there. If I phone another hairdressers would they be able to ‘fix it’ or is it too bleached now?

This is a before and after from the hairdressers I use. If you can find the right colourist, it's a better spend than box dye. I say this as someone who had a blonde disaster in my 20s then ended up with sightly green muddy brown from covering it with box dye!

Buy some beach blonde purple dye. It tones down orange hair and makes it nice and ashy. It doesn't make it purple.

FeatheredHope · 10/07/2021 12:57

Get some purple shampoo and conditioner on it to tone it and I think it will be lovely

scottmichael · 10/07/2021 13:34

Don't touch it yourself. I'd go to another hairdresser for a root drag and toner.

YellowMonday · 10/07/2021 14:01

Don't box dye! That will impact any future colours until your hair grows out/is cut off.

You need at home toner, will help until you can see a professional.

What type of hairdresser are you seeing? For that type of style/colour, you need to being going to a very high quality salon and seeing a senior stylist. That's what I do; I love my colour but it's quite expensive.

Elieza · 10/07/2021 15:01

Defo try purple shampoo if you’re not going to complain, it does make a difference and takes the brass right out, but you have to use continually to get these results obviously.

However if you’re going to complain do that first before you put anything on your hair. There could be some toner or something they could run through it to fix it.

Did you tell them you don’t want it golden blonde you want it the same colour as the photo ie cool blonde and they said they could achieve that? If they did I’d be expecting them to fix it as it’s clearly not what you wanted.

Don’t box dye it.

SprayedWithDettol · 10/07/2021 15:04

Bleach London do a very good white toner.

Naaaaah · 10/07/2021 15:12

I say this on every post.......most hairdressers cannot do that blended ashy colour. Go to an average salon and you will come out with warm blonde stripes. It's a real art and skill. You need a recommended colourist who really knows what they're doing. Whilst you're trying to find this rare beast, get a toner whacked on it and a bucket load of fanola purple shampoo.
