Am I missing something?

Yes. The fact that people have different amounts of money and different priorities to you.

Would I spend loads of money on a hat? No way! I do understand that other people think differently though. I wouldn't spend loads on a bag either.

I don't know how much the hats you are referring to are, but I'm currently having a hat made by a milliner. Its a beautiful, hand made piece of art. The rest of my outfit for this wedding has been bought on ebay, but the hat brings me great joy.
OTOH, I would never dream of spending ££££ on shoes or handbags

Are we talking Ascot/Henley type hats? You don't just tend to wear them once, people keep them for years. I had a boyfriend years ago who was a total Hooray Henry and his friends did the whole circuit every year - the women swapped hats amongst each other so they weren't always wearing the same ones. I'm still friends with one of them on Instagram and have seen a hat from Ascot 15 years ago crop up relatively recently.

Had I not ditched the sloane for an American I'd probably have quite the collection myself by now.

You are missing plenty.

And y y to spending more on hats than handbags.

PickAChew · 08/07/2021 21:35

People who have the money and want to wear them, that's who.

I agree Op. I love hats and look good in them but unlike shoes or bags it’s hard to find an occasion. Weddings and races are about it and you run the risk of looking “flashy” not elegant or finished.

I wish a new hat style would come in so we can all wear them on a daily basis though.
