11 year old with dandruff

Hi, my DD aged 11 has had really bad dandruff recently- not itchy at all but loads of quite big very visible flakes. She uses Head and Shoulders. Any recommendations for other products we could try. Her hair is also quite greasy at the moment, so nothing that would make that worse. Thanks

Body shop ginger shampoo and TGel shampoo from boots are both good options

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 06/07/2021 21:08

T -Gel shampoo. It’s a bit stronger I think.

The body shop ginger shampoo is pretty good & has rave reviews, I’m not keen on the smell tbh.

Nizorel is when all else fails, Drs prescribed it for DC but you can buy it from the pharmacy counter at boots.

Holland and Barrett have this which does work for me, less harsh for a younger person.

This worked well for the first couple of bottles & is a gentle shampoo but then I think my hair got used to it & it stopped working.

Or good old Vosene, doesn’t work for me but does for DH

Head and shoulders gives me terrible dandruff. I thought it must me being weird but I met someone else who said the same thing about head and shoulders. T gel works well for me personally.

GuyFawkesDay · 06/07/2021 21:27

Aveeno if it's because her scalp is sensitive skinned.

Its great, smells fab and has calmed the skin down on mine.

Mmmmdanone · 06/07/2021 21:38

Selsun is the only thing that works for me.

Dd2 has occasional cradle cap still age 11 and we use t gel when it flares up. Her auntie has the same issue and it is the only thing which helps.

tinkerbellvspredator · 06/07/2021 22:03

DD had cradle cap for a long time when little, and when she hit 10/after hair got greasier it seemed to come back with dandruff and big flakes. We tried head and shoulders which improved it to start with but not completely. A few random shampoos and it got really bad (massive thick scales) so she used Alphosyl medicated shampoo for 4 weeks which cleared it up (DH uses this for his psoriasis). Then we got the Body Shop ginger shampoo which she's been using since. Has mostly been clear with a few small flakes at times but using this for about 4 months and has worked well.

My DD has the same problem. She has tried a few of the shampoos suggested. They either made her dandruff worse or made her head itchy. At the moment she is using Dentinox cradle cap shampoo and the dandruff has improved. Her hair is shiny and less greasy also.

That sounds really similar to my DD so useful to know. Thanks everyone for the tips.

We use Nizoral to clear the initial’batch’ on DD12 then can be maintained with vosene or ginger shampoo. Also I remind her to was frequently- none of the trying to stretch out the days in between or using dry shampoo to avoid washing!
Invariably she switches back to perfumed shampoo and it returns though and the process starts again.
