Badly chapped lips - this is terrible!

Funnylittlefloozie · 06/07/2021 17:48

I'm only slightly joking - my lips are a nice shape, I get compliments about them, they are one of my nicer features. BUT, they are suddenly so painful. They are chapped, peeling, cracking at the corners of my mouth. It is not good.

What treatment is good for sore chapped lips? I use Carmex and the orange O'Keefes lip balm at the moment and they are ok, but not great. I'm willing to try anything (at pretty much any cost) if it will stop the cracking and peeling.

Also, I love lipstick. I think my lipstick is making it worse. Can anyone recommend a really moisturising lippy; again, I am not too concerned about price at this stage. I wear long-wear cheap stuff (rimmed, maybelline) for work, and Mac and Estee Lauder type stuff for fun. Everything just dries out my lips.

I drink LOADS of water, btw, so I'm sure that's not the magic answer.

Blistex solved my terrible chapped lips a while ago and they never came back.

Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx · 06/07/2021 17:57

Blistex relief cream www.pillpost.co.uk/product/blistex-relief-cream-5g/

Solved all my chapped lips issues as an adult.

As a teen they were so badly chapped I was given a light steroid cream by the doctor, my lip split as they were that chapped. That also worked a dream

ILoveShula · 06/07/2021 18:00

I think the Carmex and O'Keefe's have salicylic acid in them so will make them worse the more you apply it.

I suggest Blistex , the one in a tube and I like chapstick as a salve.

This happens to me when I forget to take my vitamin B. Its called Angular Chelitis. Always goes away when I take my B again.

I second the Blistex, it really helps while I'm waiting for my skin to heal.

Miseryisabutterfly · 06/07/2021 18:35

I also think that Carmex and Blistex actually make your lips worse with time. I use a Vichy lip balm and find it very good. Even Vaseline would be preferable to me over the others.

I used landing lanolin the last time I had seriously chapped lips - worked like a dream.

NorthernTights · 06/07/2021 18:57

I’ve always used Gale Hayman Liplift from QVC which is lovely and moisturising. Apply generously every night and I’ve not had cracked lips for years now. They also used to do a gentle lip scrub, which was amazing, but don’t seem to do that anymore.

ILoveShula · 06/07/2021 18:59

I'd take an A-Z multivitamin @Funnylittlefloozie, it's probably a sign that you are run down.

Anon992 · 06/07/2021 19:08

If chapped at the corners, can be a form of fungal infection:

I had similar, really sore - I went to the pharmacy and they sold me a caneston type cream over the counter which shifted it in about a week. Also agree that vitamins are important.

Body shop hemp lip butter. It's the only thing I'd bother buying from there these days. I used it when I had roaccutane.

Blistex and a big spoonful of Marmite for your B vitamins (that's a Mumsnet tip from days of yore)

This happens to me every winter, Blistex or nipple cream are the best I've found...or lanolips

idontlikealdi · 06/07/2021 20:30

Blistex intensive. Carmex, chapstick, Vaseline etc all make things worse.

careerchangeperhaps · 06/07/2021 20:38

My lips split and get chapped in the corners when I'm low on B Vitamins. Have a spoon of marmite in a small cup of warm water (nicer than it sounds Smile) and get some b vitamins tomorrow.

Dogscanteatonions · 06/07/2021 22:11

Blistex is out of stock everywhere, they moved factories and have to get approval.as it's counted as a medicine and are still awaiting MHRA approval.

There is even a blistex lip relief support group on Facebook!

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 06/07/2021 22:19

yep nipple cream

it's a game changer

butterry · 06/07/2021 22:21

Nuxe reve de miel is the best, I buy it as a little gift quite often and recipient always loves it

goldpendant · 06/07/2021 22:33

As for lipsticks, I use Bobbi brown, the one in a gold case (luxe intense) is super moisturising. For lighter, more natural look their lip tint is lovely (basically a tinted balm).

JaggyJumper · 06/07/2021 22:36

Dr paw paw is the best I’ve used. I get cracks at the side of my mouth in the winter and it’s the only thing that clears it up quickly

dancemusicsexromance · 06/07/2021 22:39

When I miss my Vit B tablets for a few days or If I drink alcohol my mouth in the corners gets like this.

A few days of vitamin B and it clears right up.

Hellvelyn · 06/07/2021 23:03

I always find lightly exfoliating my lips helpful when they are chapped. Seems to take the layer of dead skin off so when loads of moisturiser is applied it's to nice smooth lips.

Calyx72 · 06/07/2021 23:13

I just found Glossier lip balm which is lovely
I second lanolin lip products
Never chapped now, was previously really bad

TiredButDancing · 07/07/2021 00:20

I have always found labello lip balm (available on Amazon) works brilliantly. There's one called labello med - slather that on a few times a day and the chapping/dry starts to go away v quickly. My lips have been known to bleed in the corners or in the middle and usually within a day of using labello it's much better.

I've never been able to figure out why it's so much more effective than what I assume are almost identical products such as Nivea, I just know it works.

nervousseacreature · 07/07/2021 00:24

Elizabeth Arden eight hour cream - miracle worker. Think you might get tinted/lipstick ones too.
