Are these Pensioner Sandals?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/07/2021 09:39

I'll be wearing them anyway because they are very comfortable, but it has been suggested to me that it might actually be illegal for anyone not in receipt of their state pension to appear in public in these?

I just need to know so I can run if the fashion police are nearby.

@Bagelsandbrie

If they were black or tan they’d be better. They’re okay.
I was going to say at least they are not beige.
TeaAndStrumpets · 01/07/2021 11:43

They are lovely Florrie, I've got some similar ones from Gabor. I didn't need to show anyone my birth certificate, just my credit card!

BTW I am 70 and my feet are quite nice.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 01/07/2021 11:43

Clicked just to find out where you got them, as they must be borderline acceptable and comfortable too! Delighted as TK Maxx is one of the few shops we have left.

I am not quite an OAP, currently wearing silver M&S flip flops.

FreeBritnee · 01/07/2021 11:45

If say no. The sole makes them look current.

Dohrehmee · 01/07/2021 12:05

I like them. They look comfy and smart and casual at the same time. Ive seen far more hideous ones .

Blossomtoes · 01/07/2021 12:12

God, the bloody ageism on MN! It’s so casual half you don’t even know you’re doing it.

This pensioner wouldn’t wear them because of attitudes like yours, OP. That’s one of the reasons why I’m wearing DM sandals today.

ouchmyfeet · 01/07/2021 12:15

@Palavah

Yes, which is what's in fashion
This. If they're comfy, wear them and be assured that you are the height of fashion OP Grin
JaneJeffer · 01/07/2021 13:06

@Imdoingitnow

I'm perplexed that some of you seem unable to wear anything unless it gets the mumsnet seal of approval. Are you incapable of making your own mind up about what to wear - what to think??
That's kind of the point of S&B.
Imdoingitnow · 01/07/2021 15:07

Sad isn't it

midsomermurderess · 01/07/2021 17:03

I do wish you people would go elsewhere with all your policing of people's posts and language, your pompous, performative disapproval. It's style and beauty. It used to be a place where you could escape from the endless Mumsnet bickering. Now. it seems so many of you deliberately seek it out, 'who can I berate and disapprove of today'. Most of you sound like 6th formers who have just discovered feminism, and by God, are the rest of us going to hear about it.

Maireas · 01/07/2021 17:14

@Ulna

It is great to get an impartial opinion on what my shoes are saying to the world!

Come off it, OP. You're using 'pensioner' as a synonym for ugly, unfashionable, undesirable, as is everyone else on this thread joking about 'gran' sandals.

'Are these gay sandals?'
'Are these Jewish sandals?'

Ageism is an absolute fucking scourge on these boards and everywhere else and all this faux-naivete just adds to the insult.

Thank you, @Ulna. I was just about to comment. Style and Beauty is plagued by ageism. So offensive.

Yep. This.

It’s not ageist to say you don’t want to look 80 when you’re 40. I don’t want to look like I’m dressed like an 18 year old either!

Everyone is so ready to jump on everyone all the time now.

Blossomtoes · 01/07/2021 17:25

It’s not ageist to say you don’t want to look 80 when you’re 40

Unless you’ve had a very hard life you couldn’t possibly look 80 when you’re 40. Of course it’s ageist, it’s the absolute essence of it because you’re implying that nobody over pension age could possibly be stylish.

Bagelsandbrie · 01/07/2021 17:29

That’s complete nonsense.

You can be 80 and be stylish and look 80.

You can be 40 and be stylish and look 40.

Why would I want to dress and look 80 or older than whatever age I am?

People can wear whatever they like and there shouldn’t be any “limit” on clothes but we’re kidding ourselves if we are trying to say that someone who is in their 40s will want to wear exactly the same as someone much older and vice versa.

Imdoingitnow · 01/07/2021 17:30

Is it ok to ask if a pair sandals make you look like a pensioner - no it's not ok.

Maireas · 01/07/2021 17:30

It's been said upthread, but pensioner ie elderly, is being used as a synonym for ugly, dull, frumpy and old fashioned. Many older women continue to have an interest in fashion and remain stylish. Why not say -
What do you think about these sandals? Are they dated, old fashioned, unflattering?
I think they're all of the above and wouldn't wear them. Nothing to do with age.

Blossomtoes · 01/07/2021 17:33

Are we? My 28 year old stepdaughter and I completely independently bought the same dress a couple of weeks ago. We both look lovely but very different in it. She’s thrilled that our feet are the same size as she benefits greatly from my shoe habit.

Style, real style, is ageless.

Tehmina23 · 01/07/2021 17:37

Regarding so called 'granny chic', I have ladies over 70 as relatives & also as patients.
Those who often buy the comfortable sandals from places like Hotter & Clarks tend to buy those sandals that are made in prettier colours, or shiny metallics, or have a bit of decoration.
They often wear bright colours & make an effort to look quite stylish actually.

So be careful when you say 'granny chic'.
I think what you mean is 'frump chic' and that can hit at any age.

And if you're happy to wear frump chic (such as the sandals pictured sorry) that's fine.

Tehmina23 · 01/07/2021 17:39

Sorry what I'm trying to say is that many grannies are chic!!

Bagelsandbrie · 01/07/2021 17:42

Maybe. Perhaps I’m coming from this at a slightly different angle to most people….

When I was younger I had no health issues. I developed chronic rare health issues in my late 30s and now I’m in my 40s there are lots of things I would have worn in my younger years that I wouldn’t now for comfort and health reasons - completely flat shoes (I need padding underfoot!), non elastic waists, completely one colour tops (I sweat like a trooper due to the chemotherapy I’m on for lupus so go for prints), I need comfy pants I can wear with incontinence pads due to bladder issues etc. And so on. Yep, not everyone has any of those issues so perhaps they can look at stuff they wore in their 20s and wear the same sort of things but I bet equally there are a lot of 40/50/60 plus women who can relate to at least some of that due to the inevitable stuff that often happens as we age. So our clothes needs do often change. And that’s okay. It’s okay to say that.

Bluntness100 · 01/07/2021 17:44

Actually I’m fairly sure I had a pair like that when I was about ten. For me not granny ish but the sandals you’d see little girls running about in. I actually thought thru were kids shoes.

ILoveShula · 01/07/2021 17:46

They aren't, @TheYearOfSmallThings, if both straps were adjustable they might be.

I'm old enough to be a grandmother and wear birkenstocks and avarcas.

Bluntness100 · 01/07/2021 17:50

Not that it makes a difference but I genuinely think thy are children’s.

Maireas · 01/07/2021 17:53

Indeed, bodies do change with age. What's not nice, @Bagelsandbrie, is to suggest that age is the factor in losing sense of fashion and style. I would suggest it's not age. Some women, in spite of infirmities, still look great! (I hope you find comfy shoes and clothes that look and feel great!)

joystir59 · 01/07/2021 17:56

I really like them but I am 63. It's the white soles that mark them as old
