Can anything help me grow my nails?

I have pathetic thin weak nails.. if they even reach the end of my fingers they disintegrate..flake away in layers. I have never been able to grow them.
Unfortunately I need nails.. on my right hand for playing classical guitar, and have resorted to glue on ones (the 'proper' fake nails are too thick whereas Primark cheapys are great). But this just makes my own nails even frailer.
Any suggestions? My hair is long and thick and healthy so I'm not convinced I'm lacking anything in my diet.. but would take supplements if it might help me grow some nails!

Perhaps you need onto look into gels or Brisa nails to give you the stench you need?

princessTiasmum · 30/06/2021 21:53

Biotin, good for nails and hair

Girlintheframe · 30/06/2021 22:29

Biotin made a big difference to my nails

Beebumble2 · 01/07/2021 09:14

I had the same problem for my whole life. Since the beginning of lockdown I’ve taken hair, skin and nail supplements, and iron.
Not done much for my hair growth, but my nails are now the best ever. I’m spending a fortune on nail varnish!
It does take time and perseverance.

StillMedusa · 01/07/2021 22:06

Thanks! I'll get some Biotin supplements and hope :)

Haven’t personally tried this, but collagen supplements might help

AnaViaSalamanca · 01/07/2021 22:07

And more protein in your diet (preferably animal)

StCharlotte · 01/07/2021 22:08

Once I started regularly painting them my nails improved.

StillMedusa · 02/07/2021 19:42

I'm veggie so animal protein isn't an option (I used to eat meat tho and they were still awful) I do eat lots of cheese tho!

Try to minimise exposure to water, so wear gloves for washing up and don't soak in the bath etc.

ShinySquirrel · 02/07/2021 19:54

I used to swear by Nailtiques Formula 2 nail strengthener, and then it became impossible to get hold of as they had a factory fire.

I've tried dozens of other products trying to find a replacement.

This one is the one you want, it's brilliant. Just as good, if not better, than Nailtiques.

The bottle is a decent size too, especially compared to Nailtiques which was tiny.

My nails were weak, flaking and peeling, and now I can get them really long if I remember to use the stuff!

I take a collagen supplement, makes a massive difference to the strength of my nails.

namechange90832 · 02/07/2021 20:13

I get gel nails done every 3 weeks, they make my nails grow really long and don't break due to the gel, when they're removed they're still really weak but the gel (usually) stops them breaking to the point I have to file them down.

bungabungaboo · 02/07/2021 20:15

I massage my cuticles with oil- grow really well Smile

Pekkala · 02/07/2021 20:16

I have had similarly crap nails all my life but have been taking collagen supplements for several months and some of them are now over the end of my fingers, which is a first. Unfortunately, the only 2 sources of collagen I have seen are bovine and marine so won't be an option for you as a veggie.

Baby oil

Scottishflower65 · 02/07/2021 20:30

www.nealsyardremedies.com/frankincense-intense-beauty-boost-supplement/12694718.html

Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Nails used to peel all the time - now almost too hard! Hair is thicker than ever in mid fifties. Contains Biotin and other lovely ingredients.

MrsFin · 02/07/2021 20:34

They used to recommend raw jelly because of the gelatin. Apparently it's good for nails

chesterelly · 02/07/2021 20:37

I used to get acrylics but have swapped to a gel builder, so a bit like gel polish but thicker and can be left natural or a colour applied on top. Much prefer them. There is still a flexibility so they don't chip and damage my own nails. Gives my nails strength without lots of extra thickness that the acrylics did.

GlamGiraffe · 02/07/2021 20:41

I find using nail eny by OPI hrlps makemy nails which are like yours into normal people's type of nails! They even grow long enough to have decent looking french manucures with it. But always wear rubber gloves and keep the ends gently filed using a non metal file as it stops them fraying before they start.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 02/07/2021 21:15

Both the Neal's yard supplement and the Eylleaf strengthener are out of stock.

The Nail Envy by OPI is available though. I might give that a go as my nails are pathetic. I started putting gel on them about a year ago but I think they need a break every so often.

Mumdiva99 · 02/07/2021 21:20

Another vote for Nailtiques

MrsArcher23 · 02/07/2021 21:43

I’ve had weak, flaky nails for years. Could never get them to grow. I’ve been taking vitamin D regularly over past year and my nails have become really strong.

DianaPrinceRocks · 02/07/2021 23:00

Another vote for OPI Nail Envy. It's pricey but the only nail product I've ever used that's worked.
