Hen Do ... mid afternoon

MindTheBumps · 30/06/2021 09:02

So I am going to a hen do in our nearest big city. Usually hen do = dressed up, but this one starts at 12.30 in the afternoon with a boozy afternoon tea and then moves on to a gin bar.

I have this outfit... but I don't know if its too much because of the time of day? Or does the occasion (hen do) trump the time?

Hen parties don’t automatically equal tacky!

It’s too OTT for me personally tbh, it looks quite cheap material and I can’t imagine it’s flattering to anyone on. But if all your friends are wearing similar things then it would be fine and you’d blend in to the group.

I think you need to check with them rather than MN though.

stevalnamechanger · 30/06/2021 09:08

Way too Ott sorry .

Unless that's the style everyone else dresses in I think you'd stand out for the wrong reasons

DinosaurDiana · 30/06/2021 09:10

Will you be wearing a vest under it ?

Bancha · 30/06/2021 09:21

I would not wear that —ever— to afternoon tea. But I think it’s a know your people thing. None of my friends would ever wear anything like that, so I’d stick out like a sore thumb if I did. If this group will be dressed like that I guess you’ll blend in.

LFQuery · 30/06/2021 09:25

To be fair I might have worn something like that when I was 21. Now I’m mid 40s it just makes me laugh that clothes that are that plunging even exist. It looks like something the ladies wear on Love Island.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/06/2021 09:29

I'm organising my sister's hen do, which is going to start just after lunch and carry on from there, and I will be wearing a summery dress. But different big cities have different dress codes! Can you find out what the other hens are thinking of wearing?
(FYI I do agree with others that that outfit would be a bit much for most occasions!)

newnortherner111 · 30/06/2021 09:57

Never mind the event, just no.

Lazydaisydaydream · 30/06/2021 10:00

Maybe it’s an age or location thing but lots of my friends would wear that outfit for an evening out. To me though afternoon tea is more casual than that. I went for a gin tasting afternoon tea recently and wore a maxi dress if that helps.

Orchidflower1 · 30/06/2021 10:01

Certainly not to an afternoon tea. Maybe if it was just an evening do( and if I was as skinny as the model and armed with a roll of sticky tape).

SleepingStandingUp · 30/06/2021 10:02

I think the issue is afternoon tea and night out on the town don't necessarily scream one outfit. I'd be conscious of every time you moved in that given you'll be day down lots , but that style with less boob would be fine

fruitbrewhaha · 30/06/2021 10:09

Oh dear. Your getting a hard time. It's obviously not an outfit for everyone. I think you need to consider that for afternoon tea you will be sitting down and reaching out for food etc so will need to tape down the front which may feel uncomfortable by 2am.

LookItsMeAgain · 30/06/2021 10:09

Personally speaking I wouldn't wear that out (wouldn't have been able to to without the girls trying to break free) as the plunge is very deep.
I think a jumpsuit (if that's what you want to wear) like this one is more suitable:

MindTheBumps · 30/06/2021 10:14

You have talked me out of it, I also have some wide leg high waist red pants and a black lace croptop which is much more suitable I think.

Just imagine the crumbs in that jumpsuit.

At least you'd have snacks from the crumbs for later on! Grin
LookItsMeAgain · 30/06/2021 10:20

This jumsuit keeps with your choice of red but is a little bit more suitable (I think) for afternoon tea & gin bar:

both jumpsuits linked are lovely!

@MichelleScarn always look on the bright side! I will need snacks to soak up the alcohol, I have only drank alcohol once this year!

I really like the one you posted originally (no way I would ever wear it as far too sexy for a middle age plump mum like me - and I always need scaffolding on top). But if you can carry it off - then go ahead.

Really I would look at where the tea is being held and what sort of place the gin bar is - that looks fine for a gin bar on a saturday night. And you could (here's me being mumsy....put a jacket over for the day time or a nice cardigan!! Lol), As others have said also depends on your friends and what they might wear.

We all wore jeans and a top for my hen do day out.

OP’s posts:See all

This has to be a wind up ?

Merrz · 30/06/2021 11:04

How old are you OP?
To me afternoon tea is quite classy, i wouldn't be wearing that jumpsuit of a crop top, unless you're 12. Nah even then i wouldn't

BusterGonad · 30/06/2021 11:07

The red knot front one is lovely. That will see you from day to night. Add a bright lipstick and some eyeliner and you'll be ready to go to the bar.

Salanda · 30/06/2021 11:23

I think it all depends on what you usually wear/what your friends will be wearing/what sort of place the afternoon tea is at/what city you’re in.

I’m in London and have been for afternoon tea for hen parties a few times. Most people wore midi or maxi summery dresses. But those were in places like the Langham and other luxury hotels which tend to be quite smart and fairly conservative for tea. However there are also places that are more focused on hen parties etc and a bit more boozy where I’m sure the outfits would be very different.

5128gap · 30/06/2021 12:04

Agree it depends on the city. You get a lot of these sort of hen do's and girls days out going on in Birmingham and that jumpsuit would be just the sort of thing worn, maybe even a little conservative! I agree that on here won't necessarily be the best guide, as people do tend to steer towards the more discreet in their tastes. I'd be more inclined to run it past the other women going on the do as you will probably be most comfortable if dressed in a similar way to them.
Ps, I love it!

MindTheBumps · 30/06/2021 13:02

@Merrz not many 12 year olds go to Hen do's

The city is Liverpool and the boozy afternoon tea is in a very Insta orientated bar.

Can you see any on line pictures to see what other women are wearing in the bar?

MindBodyChocolate · 30/06/2021 13:41

I actually think the jumpsuit is amazing! From a practicality point of view though the trousers with lace top might be better - can you take a jacket for the afternoon tea which you then take off for the gin bar?
