Paper bag trousers - how to wear ?

I’ve just bought a pair of navy paper bag trousers from Boden from eBay but I’m a bit flummoxed as to how to wear them without looking huge.

I’m early 50s and a size 10 and don’t own a single midriff exposing top 😂

Yesterday I went out for lunch wearing them with a Boden silk top in plain pink but felt a bit chunky around the middle, I changed into a plain white t shirt when I got home and this looked a bit better as it was a bit more fitted.

I want to like this style as it’s something different from my skinny jeans or cigarette trousers - but what should I be looking for ???

Paper bag trousers?!

dementedpixie · 27/06/2021 08:41

Have never heard of them tbh

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 27/06/2021 08:43

Just with something tucked in, really. Experiment and see what looks good. Ideally they are also very slightly cropped so you can show off nice shoes and a bit of ankle where it's narrowest.

It's a normal description btw so don't be stressed by those who've never heard of them.

I wouldn't bother with them. They're a fad on the way out.

Can't wait for low rise trousers to come back.

ApplesandBananas21 · 27/06/2021 08:46

Any fitted tops that can be tucked in.
T shirt, vests, long sleeve top.
If you want a fancy top so to speak try a body suit, you can get some nice going out type ones

dementedpixie · 27/06/2021 08:47

Googling suggests a fitted top tucked in or a crop top

Pulloverjumperorsweater · 27/06/2021 08:49

Just googled them so I now know what paper bag trousers are. The fitted waist is gorgeous! As long as the top is fitted and doesn’t come over the belt, I’d say anything would look good.

@Katshouldnotswim hope this link helps. It looks like it has some good advice.

Love these style of trousers, I'm hour glass so they are flattering on me but only with a fitted top tucked in. Anything else will just make you look cumbersome

Katshouldnotswim · 27/06/2021 08:55

I’m too old for the crop top route !

I know they have been around a while and are probably deeply unfashionable but that doesn’t bother me a jot.

I like them, the quality is lovely and I think I need a new summer look occasionally, so I’m going to persevere.

I think I’m so stuck in my normal tight fitting style that any deviation from that is disconcerting and out of the norm.

DH said I looked nice and he would be honest so maybe it’s just me.

I’m sure they look lovely so. A nice fitted top tucked in or even a not too loose blouse could look effortlessly stylish . You’ll be hot to trot.

Just googled them, and got presented with a picture of a lady wearing what looks like a flour sack tied up with twine.

I wear them with something tucked in like what buffy and pullover says. I have the margate ones from freepeople and it's styled with blouses or tees tucked in or sweaters.

Zengarden001 · 27/06/2021 12:57

I wear this style and I love them. Agree fitted tops. Although I wouldn't usually wear crop tops, a top with a slightly shorted length is much easier to tuck (less material) without showing any skin.

Katshouldnotswim · 27/06/2021 13:35

Wearing a flour sack tied with twine Grin

Awful. No wonder the model looks fed up !

Some good ideas, thank you

Cos always have some trousers this style so have a look at their website. At the moment they’ve got some black ones with a white or black vest type top tucked in but also have others shown with minimalist type tops. I have 2 pairs from there …. The black pair currently for sale and a grey wool pair and in both cases the pleats sit flat to the body. I was quite interested to see they had a cardigan tucked in, in one picture so I might try that for autumn.

My teen DD has been wearing paper bag trousers and shorts for a year or so - she does wear crop tops sometimes but often something fitted tucked in. She's an 8-10 and also ypung obviously, which only matters because her abdomen hasn't been through the rigours of pregnancy, weight gain and loss etc! She's also very sporty and toned. She looks great but although I'm mostly a 12 in trousers (Next 10 😁 so probably Zara/ H&M 14) I don't think there's any way I could style them to look as good as in - well anything with less surplus material around the belly!

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 28/06/2021 20:44

Tight white or black vest works best for me

dudsville · 28/06/2021 20:47

They're great for those with a waist as it emphasises it nicely. I agree with the tuck.

Leah2005 · 28/06/2021 20:51

I've bought a light grey pair and wear them with a white slim fit t shirt tucked in. I think I do look portly but they make me feel young even if I don't look it. Mine are ankle length and I wear black brogues. They are good on my heavy thighs Smile
