If Monty Don was a woman....

Where would he shop?

I really want some lovely cotton or linen stuff, in my mind I see a loose fitting linen jumpsuit with scrappy straps and a side zip. It wouldn't be 'fashion' or ridiculously wide or show a silly amount of side boob. Simple and not humongous.

I search everywhere and can never find what im after, I can't be fussed with trends, but want some more choice. I used to like toast but they fit me horribly and the colour palettes don't suit me.

Are there any shops I don't know about that can do me a Monty style wardrobe? Natural fabrics that could see me gardening or walking by the lake, etc...

Lovely jacket Zebra, especially the colour!

I'd be happy if DH dressed like Monty Grin

thedevilinablackdress · 17/03/2023 16:23

Came across this clothing maker and immediately thought of this thread
www.bluebarn.life/

MayIDestroyYou · 17/03/2023 17:22

I don’t know - quite a lot of that clothing looks more like costume, a fantasy of country life, rather than the gently crumpled sophistication of an internationally successful gardener and TV personality. Isn’t it all a bit self consciously ‘artistic’?

thedevilinablackdress · 17/03/2023 17:57

I see what you're saying. It's definitely more wafting about the flower meadow, than getting stuck in with a trowel.

MayIDestroyYou · 02/04/2023 11:03

This thread has been cited so often recently on other S&B threads - thought it worth revivifying for a lazy Sunday …

Bet01 · 05/08/2023 15:16

Reading this thread (on a lazy Sunday) has reminded me of the Rowan knitting pattern book my stepmum had in the 90’s, featuring a very young Kate Moss. I thought she was so beautiful. The vibe was definitely Monty Don (maybe mixed with a bit of US-frontier-chic?) This was my fave pic: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/18-sappho

That is a magnificent jumper, @Bet01, and one I'd keep for picturesque picnics in the park. If I wore it in my garden it would be snagged by the bougainvillea and possibly drenched in Dynamic Lifter, which is why I stick to tatty old leggings and nightshirt from circa 1992.

Look at Kate's dear little watering can. She's off to nurture her seedlings 🌱

Bet01 · 05/08/2023 17:29

@groovergirl 😁 I expect she’s got some twine hidden in one of those pockets. Possibly a burlap sack. No idea what for…

Wbeezer · 10/08/2023 12:43

I think I've got the original Rowan pattern book with that in it. I knitted a cardigan edged with triangles that sadly was chewed to bits by a mouse in storage otherwise I'd be tempted to get it out and wear as " vintage"

Bet01 · 10/08/2023 14:17

Oh wow @Wbeezer that’s amazing (although sad to hear about the mouse-chewed cardigan.) I loved that Rowan book. It was the height of chic, I thought. Kind of ahead of its time really…

Craftycorvid · 10/08/2023 18:57

I do love the knitting patterns from that era! I have the Kaffe Fassett pattern books to keep me happy. 🤗

Wbeezer · 11/08/2023 12:06

@Bet01 yeah that blooming mouse chewed right through a bunch of handknits to make a nest in the middle of the bag, all from that era and knitted when I worked in a posh woolshop and had a staff discount on yarn and first dibs on the sale stock. Never had the time and money again to replace them😭

If you still have them these sound like great candidates for some visible mending!

Wbeezer · 11/08/2023 20:42

Unfortunately seriously shredded not just knibbled! There was a nest in the centre of the storage bag. I do have some darned gardening jerseys though!

Oh boy, it is still going!
I was the OP, under a different username of course (there have been a few), and I am delighted to see it is still thriving to some extent. I have popped in on and off since but had no idea it was still here.

I am no further forward in my quest to obtain such items.
As previously noted, I find so many contemporary natural textiles to be overly boxy, blunt and stiff. I long for smooth lines, fluid shapes and finer knits, but there hasn't really been much in that way of shopping since the 90's to be honest. I do use ebay and search used items, but apart from a few 2010+ oversized jumpers from Poetry....nothing.

My current favourites are my Toast pull on cords, a White Co droopy cardigan in a lovely petrol blue and some old, soft, good weight jeans from Mango. I did manage to get through the summer wearing Wrap vests and linen tops, and found a fantastic pair of wide leg linen trousers in a local charity shop with a non elastic mid waist waistband (so rare!).

My main issue with workwear and higher end trousers is the proliferation of chunky elasticated waistbands. They are not always comfortable. Some of these trousers are so high waisted that they reach my boobs, so a lot of lovely things are off limits for me, still. I don't want to look like my grandfather, even if he did remind me somewhat of the older Monty Don.

And as the new season is upon us, I am still short of at least one pair of decent trousers. I have 2 pairs in total for the colder months, and don't want to wear them out. I would love a loose fit style such as these, but with a non elastic waist (or even better - mid rise) in a fine wool.

Fluid Crepe Bubble Trouser

A Sahara signature that defies seasons and trends, this fluid crepe top features a generous flared silhouette. Featuring an elasticated waist, pockets, stitch detailing and flattering bubble silhouette with a slight crop, these trousers are an everyday...

Glad you're still around op.

I'd love someone to buy those Carrier Dutch Trousers and report back. I've looked at them so many times but the sizing always bamboozles me - it says to measure yourself 2 inches below your belly button for your waist size, but that's not my waist, it's virtually my hips. And then I read that, they're not really designed for my height but that they could make some specially for me if I contacted them, which is lovely but by this point I'm exhausted just trying to figure it all out. Oh for a shop where I could just go and try on a couple of pairs.

MayIDestroyYou · 08/09/2023 20:20

(Gosh - I’d almost forgotten I had this name.)

Nice to see you, OP! I am still constantly recommending this thread to people I think might appreciate it.

Those Sahara trousers are a problem. Too floppy - and black - for out; way more £ than I’d consider for home. And viscose, so no good for gardening as they’d catch on everything. But I do like the shape.

Craftycorvid · 09/09/2023 07:05

Just popped on to recommend Oska trousers - the cut is genius! They do have half elasticated waistbands but they are brilliantly constructed. They are very expensive but last forever and are often located on eBay (where I get mine).

thedevilinablackdress · 09/09/2023 10:18

Hi @Craftycorvid , fellow Oska trouser lover and eBay stalker 😁

fishfingersandtoes · 24/09/2023 21:33

Love this thread

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 30/10/2023 17:15

Have always bypassed this thread for some reason as I didn't think it would be of interest at all. But, it was mentioned in another thread and linked to, so I clicked and gosh, have spent the past few days dipping in and out if it. It is easily one of the most interesting threads I have read in this section for years, for more so than the Parisiennes and Clothing demographic threads.

Am a huge fan of Cawley Studio and Community Clothing, so ace to see them mentioned. Am keen to explore some of the others linked. Thank you to those who supplied the links, particularly the lovely poster who collated them all in one post 💅🏼

Monty was on radio 2 this morning talking about his new book & apparently wearing a very fetching new corduroy suit. He also talked about his love of good work wear & said he buys his clothes from all sorts of places.
