Hair - full colour or highlights?

I'm going to book myself in for cut and colour. I usually go for full head of colour but my sister says I should go with highlights. Which do you prefer and why?

Head full of colour not as flattering. Can look quite flat but easier to maintain with just the roots touched up. Potentially able to do at home even.
Hightights always maintenance. They look better more natural though but require to have more hairdressing appointments.

I prefer highlights as they add dimension to hair. Colour can look quite flat.

Foils with two different tones in them with an all over colour flood is great for adding tones and dime to the hair.
Roots can be touched up easily at home or in salon and the foils only need doing along the top parting every now and then to lighten it.
