Strappy Dresses

I have just ordered this. I love the look of it. Just look at the tie back šŸ˜ The thing is I’m well endowed and have to wear a bra (in public at least). What do other mumsnetters do with a strappy dress? It seems to me that there are two options; 1. A bra with very pretty bra straps on show 2. A strapless bra, but they look uncomfortable.
Looking forward to hearing your experiences.

Being a 36F there are only a few of my dresses where l would go braless on a warm day. Otherwise, I’ll have to stop in the ā€œnaff campā€.

I still think a pretty bra showing looks OK. Not clear straps though. They glisten in the sun.

AnnieSnap · 21/06/2021 14:55

@StarlightLady I like the idea of pretty bra straps showing - like a little fashion statement in itself. One problem though is that bras in 40DD always seem to have a broader strap than those in smaller sizes, but I’ll take that on the chin if I can find some that are very pretty. I’ll also try a strapless. Maybe this one. This is all contingent on me liking the dresses of course.

Ooh not a plastic strap Envy You can always see it and it looks like it would feel sticky.

I'd wear those over a white t-shirt. 90s fashion is back, it makes strappy dresses much more wearable, and it solves your bra dilemma.

UniBallEye · 21/06/2021 16:15

I'm really not a fan of the bra straps showing myself and I'd wear a strapless bra under those dresses.

StarlightLady · 21/06/2021 17:47

OP. Pretty is possible in larger sizes! That is why l don’t do white or beige, ever. I have had several encounters with strapless bras, all failures.

If you go for Pour Moi, be prepared to try several different band or cup sizes. Their sizing appears to be all over the show, as far as I’m concerned. Quality is reliable though. Otherwise try Panache or Fantasie.

You need Perky Pear boob tape. You're welcome x

Perky Pear noob tape with 61-year-old DDs (so heading South) may be a little ambitious 😮

Not at all. I am a droopy, middle aged 34G (well one boob still is, but she's soon to be matched to her perky 34D sister) and Perky Pear tape is more than a match for my 34G.

I have a strapless wonderbra I wear with strappy dresses now - not uncomfortable at all and stay put really well. I sized up on the band size compared to my usual Freya bra size following advice on here and its a perfect fit. I ordered a Freya strapless/ multiway bra too but sent it back - the wonderbra is better. I'm a 34 FF or 34 G depending on style usually and got a 36 G.

SpamIAm · 21/06/2021 18:53

The wonder bra strapless bra is comfy. Agree with PP about going up a band size, but that's based on my Boob or Bust size and I assume you're still using the old plus 4 measurement.

Tbh with casual dresses like that though I just wear a nude bra with thin straps. Yes you can see them but it's not supposed to be a secret that I'm wearing a bra. I know straps are often wider on larger cup sizes but I got some thinner ones recently which went up to an E cup in my size so you might find something there.

RampantIvy · 21/06/2021 19:30

I'm going to be the first one to bite, but do you really have a 40" underbust measurement?

AnnieSnap · 21/06/2021 19:34

@RampantIvy I do!

Oh, I hope I didn't offend Blush. I was going to suggest that your bra size might need adjusting.

idontlikealdi · 21/06/2021 20:22

Oh I hate those also transparent bra straps. Get a lovely bra in a lovely colour. You need a bra (or want to wear a bra), show it off.

AnnieSnap · 21/06/2021 21:46

No offence taken @RampantIvy I just had a check recently.

I confess to 2 pairs of crotchless knickers at the bottom of the top drawer. They haven’t seen the light of day for so long!

They were sold as ā€œhealth knickersā€ back in the day. ā€˜Not sure whose health they were supposed to benefit though

They sold crotchless tights too; never worn those!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 22/06/2021 06:30

Is that maybe a bit off topic Starlight WineWink

peaceanddove I just looked up that perky pear boob tape and, whilst it looks like a good idea for plunge/ backless/ halter neck dresses surely it comes up too high for strappy or strapless dresses? Do you wear it with strappy/ spaghetti strap dresses? Doesn't it show? Its not exactly tape is it? More pad shape and says it comes up to the breast bone - which sounds good support wise but not with a spaghetti strap dress.

StarlightLady · 22/06/2021 06:37

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme - 100% off topic and with apologies to all. 🄵 it was meant to be lighthearted on the things you have never worn thread.

StarlightLady Grin I thought maybe you had just got in/ were still up/ in a different time zone and enjoying a glass or two Grin

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 22/06/2021 06:44

peaceanddove I've just looked more and seen there's a bandeau design too. Its quite expensive for a single use product to wear with everyday sun dresses though. Useful idea though and does open up possibilities - I never buy anything I can't wear some kind of bra with...

Nowthisisme · 22/06/2021 06:49

I’m a DD and I would wear a yoga style bralette with pretty straps in a contrasting colour. You don’t get the same boob shape as a regular bra would give but it looks relaxed and summery
