What is my skin undertone?

Hi everyone, I have trouble finding the right foundation/makeup in general for my skin. I can't seem to work out what my skin undertone is using the "vein test". I came across this yesterday and don't know if this is a legitimate thing that can determine your undertone but it would be useful in finding colours/makeup that suits me etc. I have fair skin with more of a red/pink tint and burn more easily so would assume I'm cool. But my veins seem to be a mix of purple and a greenish light blue? It's the greenish tint that is confusing me, unless this is light blue. I know this isn't a first world problem but I am interested 😂 if anyone can let me know please that would be great. Apologies if this is nonsense or not a legitimate thing.

Cool if your skin is red or pink.

Deathraystare · 15/06/2021 11:17

If you have any lipsticks - especially red ones - try a blue red (burgundy wine colour)and then a more warmer red. which one suits better? You could also do this with pinks = try a fuchsia pink (blue pink) and a morer warmer pink.

For the record - I burn quite easily in the sun but no way am I cool toned. My veins are green. I did have reddish cheeks as I have high blood pressure but since I took medication this has got much better.

I think I have quite neutral colouring as I can get away with some cool shades but my colouring is Warm Ivory (says so on the bottle!!).

Do you suit gold or silver jewellery more ?

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/06/2021 11:36

I don't know OP, but our skin tone looks quite similar. Regardless of any 'rules' my skin is pretty pale with olive (grey/green) undertones (which are far more obvious when its had any sun).
I'm generally about as pale as it gets outside of summer and I have much more luck with korean makeup shades that pull in a taupey grey, rather than orange or pink or a yellow undertone, which everything in the UK seems to.

There isn't much pink in my skin and no yellow. If I'm shopping on the high street I stick to neutral-cool shades and to very blendable light medium coverage fluids so it doesn't matter so much if it isn't quite right. They look fine for day to day but are never a tonal match up close.

I think it's easier to try 2 lipsticks, one fushia pink and one neon orange, if the orange looks great on you then you are warm, if it makes you look bloody terrible than you are cool. I'm cool toned, dark hair, green brown eyes, light skin (normally cool ivory or vanila foundations) I burn in the sun but can get a tan, more of a beige rose shade when tanned. I suit red, black, white, navy is a favourite, khaki, charcoal and pinks from pastels to brights, I do not really suit bright yellows or oranges or rusty colours, browns are not so good either. Urban decay naked heat doesn't suit me as its too warm. Lipstick wise I wear all pinks, berries, purples, some carols, blue reds, true reds, burgundies. Warm nudes make me look dead, 90s browns the same.

Impossible to tell from a photo, and the veins test is basically rubbish. Sorry!

BusterGonad · 15/06/2021 11:39

My rings are white gold, but I also love rose gold.
The above when I mention colours it clothes wise!

I can't see any pink in that pic of your wrist. Someone on here linked to a good explanation a while back of the many tones including warm, cool, peach, olive, neutral - I'll see if I can find it. I struggled as I thought I was neutral, having both pink and blue tones in my skin, but neutral foundation made me look grey. Then I tried a "peach" shade and bingo.

BusterGonad · 15/06/2021 11:52

That's interesting Vohgue as I like a, peach tone myself. I find it flatters my freckles as some cool tones leave me looking grey due to the freckles showing through.

silversable · 15/06/2021 12:06

Thanks everyone - just for some more info my eyes are green (not a bright green) and I have brown hair (light-medium). @BusterGonad we sound quite similar as I too don't look in oranges or yellows - I also tend to go for navy and red or grey, white and black (clothes-wise). I suit silver jewellery. Foundation is where I always struggle as I'm pale but do have colour to my cheeks and skin so don't want to go too pale and look dead. I also have freckles that come out a lot in the sun. The peach tone sounds interesting @Vohgue, I might have to have a look! I have been told I look good with red lipsticks and neutral tone lipsticks before, would never dream of going for a bright orange as I already know it would look bad but I think I'll have a look at some different ones to see!

I also can tan (after a while), but get burnt very easily first!

silversable · 15/06/2021 12:08

I do also have a coral lipstick that looks quite decent on me!

Maybe go for Cool Sand, Nude or Ivory? I always think of ivory as very pale but some brands Ivorys' are darker in tone. I keep banging on, but at the moment my favourite foundation is Bareminerals stick foundation in Vanila. It's like a peachy nude shade. But so far it's the only foundation that doesn't make my freckles look grey. I live in South East Asia so I'm a cool tone with a slight tan (for me) and lots of freckles.

silversable · 15/06/2021 12:18

If anyone has any foundations that they recommend for my skin, that would be super helpful. The paler/ivory colours always seem to be a bit too yellow for me and wash me out.

Take a look at this, I've got Vanila but when I shade matched on Findation the Buttercream was also said to be a good match.

silversable · 15/06/2021 12:20

Sorry @BusterGonad, just seen your post! That sounds interesting, thanks!! The peachy nude might be a good shout for me to avoid washing out my natural colour.

BusterGonad · 15/06/2021 12:22

But to add I think Buttercream would be in summer after a beach holiday! 😂 But Vanila is perfect for me. 👌

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 15/06/2021 12:27

@silversable I have grey-blue eyes, brown hair (if I don't bleach it) and wear similar colours to you. I use Nars cosmetics BB cream in the lightest shade and it is so so good. They also do foundations. John Maclean on Youtube (somewhat dubious tweets but good makeup advice) reviews foundation for very pale skin and I've found using Nars base on his recommendation.

littlepeas · 15/06/2021 12:37

I struggle to determine whether I am warm or cool too op - I also have green eyes and light brown hair! I think I lean very slightly warm, but it is very subtle, really not obvious at all.

I used to have two bikinis that were the same style but were different colours - a brown one and a raspberry one - I significantly preferred the brown one. I would also choose to paint my toenails gold and choose gold toned sandals over silver - another hint. I wouldn't actually choose to wear either, but I would look better in bright orange than I would in bright pink. Blue toned reds make me look like a vampire - orangey reds are better (especially when I am tanned - I go golden rather than brown). It's incredibly subtle though and you wouldn't necessarily think I was warm to look at me as a whole.
