How many very tall MNers wear heels regularly?

OrmIrian · 19/11/2007 13:23

Because I quite like them but have always felt like some sort of freak when I do. So I keep them for special occasions and then. more often then not, chicken out and put flatter shoes on. After all a 3" pair of heels makes me 6'2" tall. Mind you being 5'11" in the first place makes me a freak compared to a lot of people.

So who is happy to do this? Do you wear them and be damned? Or stick to flat shoes. And what do the more delicately-boned amonsgt us think? Do you see a six-foot plus women and instantly think she's a man in drag as I secretly fear, or what?

I'm 5'10 and used to wear heels all the time. Now I don't but only because it's hard pushing a buggy in them!

My stilettos are now reserved for the bedroom .

Harrogatemum · 19/11/2007 13:44

am 5 foot 11 and wear heels every single day. I feel funny in flat shoes. DH is 6 foot 3 and since the day I met him I dont think I have worn flat shoes (apart from running of course, you dont see me jogging along wearing Victoria Beckham-esque platform trainers......).

Although I dont tend to go over about 2.5 inches....

NomDePlume · 19/11/2007 13:45

I'm only 5'7" and so in heels I'm 5'11", I feel very tall in them and people do gawk a bit. In answer to your man in drag question... No, not unless s/he looks like a man in drag (just being tall doesn't make me think MID).

Celebrate your height, walk tall !

MegaLegs · 19/11/2007 13:46

I am 6'2" so never wear heels now, especially as DH is 6'1" and I tower over him in heels.

You share my secret fear of being mistaken for a drag queen Orm! I wear minimum make up and the simplest clothes.

OrmIrian · 19/11/2007 13:46

Well I'm past the buggy stage.
And no good in the bedroon as DH refuses to wear them.

DH bought me a sparkly low-cut top last year megalegs, but it just screamed drag queen to me. So it stayed firmly in the drawer..

I'm not as tall as some of you, just over 5'10", but I have big wide feet so an hardly ever get my feet into ladylike shoes anyway, and when I have heels on I feel far too tall and very unstable. I once fell over in a cake shop () while wearing boots with only a modest 2 or 3 inch heel - it was horrendously embarrassing. I'd still be open to the idea of beautiful heels, if I ever found any I liked and that fitted, but in practice I wear trainers, flat boots and birkenstocks.

NomDePlume · 19/11/2007 13:51

I'd love to be taller.

OrmIrian · 19/11/2007 13:53

Would you ndp? I spent years wanting to be a teeny weeny little thing like my best friends always were. My ballet teacher always used to tell me I was clumsy and too big for a dancer.... pre-Darcy Bussell days of course! And I spend most of my adolescne hunched up and self-conscious.

I must admit that I've grown into my height now and quite like it. But the heels thing is still a problem for me.

I'm 5'10" and often have similar thoughts OrmIrian.
I do tend to live in a pair of boots with 2" heels at the moment but don't often go much above that, partly because I would really tower above everyone and partly, as CranberryMartini has said, its really hard pushing a buggy (plus buggyboard) in heels.

Maidamess · 19/11/2007 13:57

I'm 5 ft 9 and love high heels! I used to feel a bit drag queeny, then I slimmed down a bit and now I love being head and shoulders above everyone else.

My only problem is my orthopaedic arch supports don't fit in all my high heeled shoes (I kid you not)

feetheart · 19/11/2007 14:01

Just another question whilst we are here. What size feet do people have and how do you find decent shoes? I'm a 42 (a real size 8 NOT a poxy 41 that some people try to get me into then reel in horror and tell me I'm really a size 9 and therefore may as well just stop looking for feminine footwear - sorry, bit of a bugbear )

MascaraOHara · 19/11/2007 14:03

5'8 and literally live in 4" heels unless I'm going to the gym

snowleopard · 19/11/2007 14:06

Oh so true feetheart! I'm a size 8, but actually a size 9 in most women's shoes because they make the 8s so small and narrow - grrrrr! Hobbs do some nice size 9s, and I fit a Dr Marten size 8 (which doesn't mean just hobnail boots these days - they do some funky women's styles). Also like Merrels, Diesel and Rocket Dog and the spanish brand Destroy for lovely boots, but they're hard to find. However these are mostly not all that ladylike, except for Hobbs.

VictorianSqualor · 19/11/2007 14:08

I used to never wear them (I am 5'8'') but ex dp was the same height as me, the only reason I don't wear them now is because they hurt! DP is 6'3'' so it isn't a problem, I just hated being so much taller than my fella.

OrmIrian · 19/11/2007 14:09

7.5 - sometimes 8. Depending on the brand.

My feet are size 10. It is getting easier to find shoes. High Street is Evans (although they can be too wide and the boots are too big in the calf)Online LTS and TallGirls do up to size 11. Also lovely shoes and boots here

TellusMater · 19/11/2007 14:11

No. Because if I did I would fall over. Had a nice pair of sandals this summer that had a 5cm wedge heel, and they were good.

Am currently looking for a pair of winter "going out" shoes with a bit of a heel - any suggestions?

I am a dainty size 8...

feetheart · 19/11/2007 14:13

snowleopard - will go in search. Tend to stick to Next, Clarks and M&S which makes me sound like a granny - I may be old enough but my two are only 2 and 4 so I have to keep up the impression that I'm young and trendy

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/11/2007 14:15

Am 5'10 and now wear mostly flats as dp is 5'10 as well - although I always wore heels to work and for clubbing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who worries about being mistaken for a drag queen. I expressed this worry to dp and he pee'd himself laughing

I am also a 42 (ie a proper size 8) and not a half arsed 41 (unless I'm wearing Birkenstocks!)

Proper size shoe makers:

Birkenstocks
Next
Jones
Evans - can be too wide though.
Sketchers
Nike

OrmIrian · 19/11/2007 14:19

So... to sum up. If I buy a beautiful eveningy dress for christmas parties (to celebrate my finally properly fitting into a size 12)and a pair of shoes with a heel, MN guarantees I will look glamourous and wonderful, and not at all like Lily Savage without the hair?

OP posts:
feetheart · 19/11/2007 14:19

Megalegs - I think I NEED Lush shoes. May slightly stretch DH's Christmas pressie budget but he might be persuaded
