How many very tall MNers wear heels regularly?

Because I quite like them but have always felt like some sort of freak when I do. So I keep them for special occasions and then. more often then not, chicken out and put flatter shoes on. After all a 3" pair of heels makes me 6'2" tall. Mind you being 5'11" in the first place makes me a freak compared to a lot of people.

So who is happy to do this? Do you wear them and be damned? Or stick to flat shoes. And what do the more delicately-boned amonsgt us think? Do you see a six-foot plus women and instantly think she's a man in drag as I secretly fear, or what?

OrmIrian - you will LOOK and FEEL fantastic. Lots of people would kill to be that size and shape so just watch out for shorties trying to trip you up

serenity · 19/11/2007 14:23

5'9 and size 8.5 feet (so I've started buying 9's rather than put up with uncomfortable 8's) I'm exactly the same height as DH, but it never used to stop me wearing heels. I stopped wearing them when I had the DCs, as it was hard enough finding a pushchair that didn't make me hunch over without adding another couple of inches of uncomfortableness on top of it!

Now the pushchairs are gone I've started being tempted again. I wore heels for the first time in ages for a wedding in the summer and quite enjoyed it (but did feel a little bit 'draggish') I'm umming and ahhing atm about getting a pair of heeled long boots for the winter.

Gemy · 19/11/2007 14:24

I am not overly tall (5'8) but I do wear heals of usually around 3 inches all the time (though I am 8 months preggers right now, so not so much lately )

Tall women in heals drag queen? Definatly not! Would not cross my mind. I see tall women strutting around in heals and think "wow!" and by the looks of other women's faces, they are more than

I love wearing my highest heals and being taller than others around me. When I wear flats, I feel a bit too 'normal'

OrmIrian · 19/11/2007 16:59

Good for you gemy! I must try to cultivate similar confidence

I'm 5'11 and def feel like drag queen in heels. I was ecstatic when ballet pumps took off, and pretty much live in them now. I do have some shoes with heels, but not really over 1". I love lush shoes too.

TeaDr1nker · 19/11/2007 17:14

I'm 5Ft 9 and love my heels, make me feel feminine and sexy - although at nine months pregnant i am in trainers, i can't wait to wear heels again. I take a true size 42, and it's sooo nice to hear that other people have the problem of going into a shop and being tols that a size 41 is an english size 8 when it's clearly NOT, i thought it was just me........

LoveAngelGabriel · 19/11/2007 17:36

I don't wear heels regularly because I'm a SAHM and spend most of my days at toddle groups or in the park, running around after my little one - so it's flat slouchy boots or trainers all the way for me. BUT I do love heels and will quite happily wear them whenever I go out - in fact, I don't feel dressed without them. I'm 5'11, by the way, and love being a 'lankster'

Plinkyplonk · 19/11/2007 17:44

I'm 5ft 11 and all my heels are at least 4" I ALWAYS wear heels.

ScoobyDoo · 19/11/2007 17:44

I am somewhere between 5'8 & 5'9 i would say nearer to 5'9, i hate wearing heels hate feeling taller, it's always been a problem for me, i do however have some boots which have 2.5 inch heels, i used to live in them before i had my kids, then was told not to wear them when pregnant as have bad back.

I only have a size 6 feet though.

I never think drag queen about any tall person though so don't worry about that

OrmIrian · 20/11/2007 11:32

I have to just mention something that happened a few years ago. DD was just starting school and I took her in to the reception playground - I was on my way to work and for a change I was wearing heels. Her friends 2yr old sister came running up to DD, stopped, looked at my feet, ran her eyes slowly up the length of my body, stared at my face with an expression of terror and scuttled away to hind behind mummy. I think she thought I was a giant

I'm sooo jealous of all you long-limbed lovelies!

I'm 4'11" with size 4 feet and feel like a little stumpy thing scuttling along in your shadows!

I was most distressed on a recent night out when I had worn the highest heels I could find. I felt really tall (even though I was still only 5'2") and confident until my tall friends turned up in their heels and I was immediately dwarfed again. I told them in future when we go out they are only allowed to wear flats !

OrmIrian · 20/11/2007 12:31

But you are teeny and fairy-lie herbie

I always wanted to be small and delicate. I've accepted it now I suppose but it would be nice not have to look for the biggest shoe size in the shop, or always scour the shelves for the only pair of extra extra long jeans.

I am 5'11" and wear heels for everything except pushing the buggy. Even with the handles extended it is only really high enough in flat shoes.

I agree with the fear of being mistaken for a man. I kept my hair really long for years because I thought a Short style would make me look butch!

The trick is to get friends who are evn taller than you then you feel petite all of a sudden

OrmIrian · 20/11/2007 12:38

I can't find anyone taller than me callmeovercautious! Apart from men...and not many of them either.

When I was still buggy-pushing I often mulled over the idea of marketing a universal handle extender for buggies for the gravitically-challenged such as myself.

Oh but Ormirian, I don't feel delicate and fairy-like - I feel like a baby elephant. None of you tall ladies look like men - you look all willowy and graceful and look great in anything.

In all of my adult life I don't think I've ever bought a pair of trousers that I haven't had to shorten. Even those from the 'petite' ranges are too long for me!! The grass is always greener, eh?!

oliveoil · 20/11/2007 13:42

I am 5'9" but have teeny feet compared to you lot

am size 6

can't walk in heels however, stagger about like Eddie Izzard

OrmIrian · 20/11/2007 13:44

As you say herbie, the grass is always greener.

I have a friend with the most lovely naturally curly hair - pre-Raphaelite mass of curls. She wants stright hair like mine She even had it straightened once at great expense and ended up looking like Tina Turner.

cmotdibbler · 20/11/2007 13:47

5ft 10 and love high heels. DH is 6'3", so I'd be pushing it to be taller than him in any shoes that aren't fetish . He did use to go out with a girl who was 6'2" and habitually wore ultra high heels - she looked fantastic too !
We spent a lot of time looking for a pushchair that both of us could push easily. The handle extenders are not attractive.

how do you learn to walk in high heels? is it a case of just practicing?

I have got some 4 inch ones to wear at the Christmas do and I changed the beds wearing them the other day! LOL! Am trying to get used to them (am not insane)

can you imagine if the window cleaner was watching...

I am ok on carpet but skid about on wooden floors

is there anything you can put on the sole to make them less slippy?
