Why are there no long tops?!

I am starting a new job soon, it’s in a school for disabled children. They have basically said I can wear what I want as long as it’s not jeans or inappropriate as they want staff to be comfy, they said a lot of the girls just wear a top and leggings. I’m quite a big girl - size 18/20 - and never ever wear leggings as trousers. In order to do so I would need tops long enough to cover my bum! Bar longline vests/T-shirt’s I can’t find anything….I wanted to wear like some smock type tops so I would still feel dressed nicely, has anyone any ideas?

Seasalt have tunic like tops that would work but not very cheap.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 01/06/2021 17:36

John Lewis have a few tunic type tops. Are you googling the right terms?

Long line top
Tunic top

Evans always had good longer tops- do they still exist?

NoNobramma · 01/06/2021 17:37

Or next online has a lot of other brands these days. Look there? I saw a lot of tunic style tops on there.

scully29 · 01/06/2021 17:37

Joe browns for sure

Inthesameboatatmo · 01/06/2021 17:38

Yours online have some tunic style tops

StevieNix · 01/06/2021 17:38

Yours clothing- in my experience all of there tops come up long (lo by enough to cover my bum with leggings) but they do have a 'tunic ' section as well that are even longer.
There are hundreds of styles/colours so I'm sure there's something you migh like

OneShotFinch · 01/06/2021 17:38

Yours Clothing have a huge selection of longline tops. Even their basic tshirts are on the longer side! And they have lots of different styles/colours.
Congrats on the new job! Smile

If you don’t normally wear leggings, could you instead wear something closer to what you normally wear? If you don’t like leggings you could do a stretchy trouser instead, for example

Viggohytten · 01/06/2021 17:40

Try short dresses as tunics - my friend said she did and it was a revelation (don’t know why, but changing the search from long T-shirt to short dress made a difference)

Castlepeak · 01/06/2021 17:40

I hate this, but Amazon has become my go-to source for consistently available, not paper thin, relatively plain tunic tops for over leggings.

Bagelsandbrie · 01/06/2021 17:40

Yours
Asos - go for dresses, their dresses are short enough to wear with leggings
Seasalt tunics
Also Tu at Sainsbury’s- their basic £3.50 t shirts come down quite long if you size up enough (I’m a 16 and buy a 22).

Serpenta · 01/06/2021 17:42

You could try harem pant type things instead of leggings. Still mega comfortable but a bit looser. And I think nicer.

The £8.50 Matalan ones became part of my working from home uniform.

Serpenta · 01/06/2021 17:43

(sorry, that doesn't answer your actual question about tops!)

OnlyTheLangOfTheTitberg · 01/06/2021 17:44

As others have said, short dresses work well as tops. Roman Original usually have a good selection at affordable prices if you’re on a budget.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 01/06/2021 17:45

Just to go for an alternative if you're not comfortable going down the leggings route I'd be tempted to wear light cotton trousers like these and normal length tops. If makaton is usual at the school, kids find it easier "see" what you are signing if you are wearing plain tops (plain backdrop) because of visual tracking difficulties.

TigerTulip · 01/06/2021 17:51

I utilise the same sort of wardrobe for my night shifts.
Curvissa and Roman Originals are good for long line and tunic tops.

Thank you everyone, I went to a big Asda and a primark yesterday hoping to find something nice and every single top seemed to be a short length, I wish they would make bigger sizes slightly longer instead of just wider! I have a black pair of jersey harem trousers so thought I would wear those also. I will have a look at all your suggestions thank you 😊
