Comfy sandals that don't rub

I mean I guess nobody can tell me if a particular sandal will rub my own individual feet...but I have this issue so often. I really struggle to find comfy ones that don't end up rubbing my feet in various places after an hour or so leading to blisters and whatnot. Often they feel fine in the shop and i only notice the issue after I've worn them for awhile. Does this happen to everyone?! Are there any good styles that make this less likely? I do have wide feet which is part of the issue I think. Although I have done the last two summers in a particular pair of sandals and yesterday it sudden started rubbing the top of one of my big toes and gave me a blister. I am pregnant so I'm assuming it's related to my feet being swollen with that, I dunno. I just want some comfy sandals!

I had a really comfy pair of Doc M's sandals a few years ago. For me the issue is that sandals are so wide. I need multiple straps to take the width down. In winter I just put multiple inner soles in my shoes. In summer I go down a size in sandals and they are still massively wide.

Anyone got any advice for me? I need lots of padding in the soles (plantar fasciitis) and sandals which don't go over the big toe (hallux rigidus) and backs (backless sandals just fall off). I tried fit flops. Lovely soles. Massively wide so completely unsuitable for narrow feet.

I have some t bar wedges from Pavers, they're really soft and I can wear them for hours. I found that the big that runs is because the leather has a sort of frayed edge. I used a glass nail file on one pair and it really helped.

Another vote for Tevas here. I have the same issue & I also hate completely flat, non padded soles - they need to have a bit of bounce.
Not the prettiest but very neutral and work with lots of outfits ( I wear mine with dresses, shorts, jeans....) also the velcro straps across the front of the foot mean you can adjust them when your feet get hot & swell, as mine do regularly. I buy mine from Amazon (especially returns of no good).

that should say - easy to return if no good 🙄

JingsMahBucket · 01/06/2021 07:29

Thanks so much for asking this question OP. I also need good attractive sandals but also need arch and heel support. I was thinking maybe Clark’s might have some? Any recs there?

Buckingafout · 01/06/2021 07:34

I have cheap (but pretty colour) Mountain warehouse. Comfortable but barely get two seasons use out of them.

DrDresaid · 01/06/2021 07:49

Birkenstocks all day!
I also have a pair of next sandals that are comfy and padded. I think they are called the sport sandal and have a cross strap and a very slight wedge. They come in all colours

IhaveaBigBum · 01/06/2021 08:12

I wear these and it's actually impossible for them to rub your feet because of the materials used... the soles are like a squishy memory foam and the straps are stretchy fabric so great if your feet swell up.
They are also personalised so you can pick your own strap and sole colour combo. Literally the comfiest sandals I've ever worn

Of you have sensitive skin on your feet prone to blisters then I would avoid birkenstocks like the plague. They need breaking in and ive never been able to manage it. My feet were constantly blistered from them. This year I got a pair of sketchers sandles and they are so comfy and no rubbing at all. They look like birkenstocks but don't hurt my feet and were a fraction of the price. My feet are so funny with shoes in general so when I find a pair that don't distroy my feet I usually just keep buying them for years.

Oh my gosh, I totally forgot to say I'm vegetarian and so don't buy leather, I totally forgot that of course most good quality sandals will be leather Blush. I will have a good search through everyone's recs and see if I can find any synthetic ones, I think the Tevas someone mentioned are synthetic so that might be a good option. Thanks so much everyone I will do some research!

Following. I usually wear Birkenstocks but the last pair rubbed.

Skechers have plenty of synthetic options too.

Good luck - my tip would be if you find a comfy pair, buy another pair for when they wear out!

Lazydaz · 01/06/2021 09:20

Just ordered saltwater sandals on the back of this thread!

Minezatea · 01/06/2021 10:00

@IhaveaBigBum

Love your user name! Also love the northern angels shoes. They look like they might work for my feet as the straps don't cover the big toe and they can properly adjust to any foot width. How thick is the base? I need something pretty padded and can't tolerate feeling stones when you're walking. Are these a robust enough sole to offer that?

Badtasteflump · 01/06/2021 10:07

Just wanted to jump in and say I must be doing something wrong with my Salt Water sandals - I wore my new pair for the first time yesterday for a short walk to the shops and they definitely rubbed ☹. They felt like a perfect fit when I put them on but today I have a red raw patch on my little toe. Do I have strange feet or something? Really disappointed 😫

SometimesALime · 01/06/2021 10:15

Skechers, I have 2 different pairs, love the fact that all aspects can be altered due to velcro straps. Wore them in Disney World in 35 degree heat with obviously sweaty feet. Never rubbed. They are also synthetic so can be washed in the washing machine. Similar to these

MrsBunHat · 01/06/2021 10:18

Keens - great for wide feet. They do both sporty ones and more fashiony leather ones.

missmoon · 01/06/2021 10:23

Teva’s are good, especially the “Tirra” ones. They come in a synthetic version too.

Betsy88 · 01/06/2021 11:02

Saltwater sandals FTW! My tan pair are still going strong after 5 years and have put in a lot of miles. I just ordered some black ones for this year.

Another vote for Teva

Bipbopbee · 01/06/2021 11:14

Saltwaters are fantastic. Comfiest sandals I’ve ever worn

amusedtodeath1 · 01/06/2021 11:15

I have the same problem OP, wide feet, lots of blisters. I'd say you're on the right track with Tevas, they do both leather and synthetic. I have two pairs and they're really good. My feets approve. Grin

IhaveaBigBum · 01/06/2021 11:18

@minezatea haha thanks... it's true lol.

The soles are about 1.5 cm thick and have a rubber base at the bottom under the foam so I've never felt any stones etc. I bought a few different colour straps too so I can swap them over to match different outfits. Saves a tonne of space in your suitcase when you go on holiday. I get blisters inbetween my toes from normal toe posts and on the back of my heel from leather straps so these really are the best things I've ever worn for summer. They look so pretty too!
