Am looking for one for dh and am thinking of ebay as we have 2 things to go to and not much cash...what should he avoid (apart from novelty waistcoats and clip on ties of course and what kind of shirt? thankyou people.

I cannot emphasise how strongly I disagree about the novelty shirts and coloured cummerbunds.

scienceteacher · 18/11/2007 19:45

Depends on the function, Mrs Badger

moopymoo · 18/11/2007 19:47

Actually I don't even like bow ties all that much. I think black tie is better with just v. smart black suit, white shirt/dark blue shirt. Is much cooler.

Dh had to go to one and I made him wear a bow tie, and then of course everyone was dressed as above and he felt like an arse. Mind you, might work the other way I suppose, and then he'd turn up like that, and everyone would think he'd forgotten to wear the right costume.

moopymoo · 18/11/2007 19:58

really? ok am scared now about tie/no tie black shirt thing.
one do is new years eve with friends non stressy thing but the other is a bit gulp. ds1 bless him has befriended son of uber alpha mummy and they (very kindly i must add in grateful manner) have bought a table at school fundraiser auction flash the cash thing.and invited us as their guests. is fee paying school, we scrape together fees, they are, erm, a little more affluent!

I was bored. And now I'm not. What a bunch!

They're all in black tie, black tie aren't they? He'd better do that then.

But no frills on shirt, no novelty ties.

Katymac · 18/11/2007 20:13

I think you will be fine with a black bowtie (buy both sorts then if you can't sort out the tied one - you are safe)
