Cottagecore, dark academia - new trends

Inspired by the Whatever Happened To S&B thread - what new trends have I missed? I had heard about cottagecore but dark academia was one that I'd missed, and I love it! Most of my work wardrobe is dark academia (not so much my home slobbing wfh clothes). Fashionistas, what trends are you liking just now? Pics or links would be lovely.

I used to follow trends by buying magazines, wandering through clothes shops and people-watching, but the last is pretty much out right now, internet scrolling is replacing the second, and I feel like magazines are less current than they used to be. I should probably be looking on Insta or TikTok (I haven't got a TikTok account), so if anyone can recommend people to follow then please hit me with some.

This thread is unashamedly about fashion, and how to follow it. Some trends won't suit me and I won't wear them, but I still like to know so that I can admire them on someone else.

Isn't that what 13 year olds wear? I mean...it is in my experience. My 13 year old loves both trends.

I'm ashamed to say I've not heard of either . Im so not relevant anymore!

I honestly don't know. I have been tempted to buy some square-necked ruched floral print tops and dresses, but I have been restrained by the fact that I haven't found one that suits me yet. But I like looking at them.

Dark academia I only came across today and a Google shows that a lot of the outfits are quite similar to things I have chosen over the years. example

Wow I've been dressing like dark academia without even realising!! I'm on it!

I heard about cottagecore last summer.... so by my reckoning it’s over cause I’m not fashionable at all, so if I know what it is, it’s done, lol.

I don't think cottagecore is for 13 year olds because I've seen lots of references to it in eg Who What Wear, Wears My Money and other online blogs/magazines aimed at adults. Not sure about dark academia - it does seem to include a witchy Harry Potter vibe (which is why I like it, ahem) so it might appeal more to teenagers, but I've yet to see a teenager around here wearing anything other than sports leggings, crops tops and hoodies.

I think my style (if it can be called that) is more "light academia" !

I've never heard of either, but having googled I can confirm I'm not a fan of "Cottagecore"

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 26/05/2021 14:27

A lot of those puffed-sleeve ruched bodices just stop too high on me - empire line isn't my best look! But I like the Little House on the Prairie vibe, and the puffed sleeves make me smile because of Anne of Green Gables. (I realise that almost all my posts so far reference children's literature as a style influence.)

Just googled both.
Cottagecore looks like if it was in M&S everyone would take the piss, but if it cost 10 times more than M&S it would be hailed as amazing. Sezanne is full of it.
Dark Academia is very brown Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 26/05/2021 14:31

I love brown - well, darker browns. I still think of a lovely brown Topshop cardigan that I left in a club when I was 21. Camel or beige on the other hand make me look dead.

Oooooh...I've been dressing in a dark academia style pretty much my whole adult life without realising! And I have recently bought some Sezane stuff so veering into cottage core too! I had no idea I was so on trend. I must tell my 16 year old Grin she will be very unimpressed and she most certainly does not dress in either of these style, nor does she wear legging / cropped tops / puffa jackets....
