Dandruff help

MNers please help. I'm 35 and about a year or so ago, out of nowhere I developed dandruff right on the top of my head at the front. And it's making me so miserable Sad I have dark brown hair so it really shows up.

I don't know why it appeared out of the blue. I hadn't changed anything. I've tried loads of shampoos, nothing helps. The only one that's made it slightly better is the ginger one from Body Shop, but this has given me spots all over the top of my back so I don't want to use it anymore.

Does anyone have any advice please? I honestly absolutely hate it and feel so embarrassed. Thanks.

Sympathies. I have had this problem for 2 years now and spend lots of money trying lots of shampoos.. The only one that has really helped me is this one.
It has stopped the itching and controlled the flakes although it has not got rid of the dandruff altogether.

Have you used a medicated shampoo from a chemist? Selsun is one. I had this. Also be careful about products you use to wash your face- I found it was them getting onto my scalp which were irritating me.

BluTangClan · 24/05/2021 16:42

Try not using shampoo at all. Rinse your hair with water and use a bit if conditioner instead of shampoo. Something like 'Faith In Nature' which isn't full of silicones and parabens.

BambooWhoosh · 24/05/2021 16:50

Nizoral?

DarlingWithoutYou · 24/05/2021 19:42

I tried the no shampoo thing and it made it worse! I'll buy anything suggested!

I find the Aveeno shampoo good for my irritated scalp. I also don't get dandruff so much with it. It's pricey at £9.99 a bottle but worth it.

NoNobramma · 24/05/2021 22:08

Nizoral was good for my son. Coal tar shampoo also.

Justnotfeelingit · 24/05/2021 22:09

I use actual Aveeno moisturiser once a week on the dry parts of my scalp. Tricky to get on, I section my hair like if I was getting my hair coloured, and paint it on and squish it in. Then leave it on overnight, wash in the morning.

Hopdathelf · 24/05/2021 22:10

Could you have a food intolerance? I developed one out of the blue and god really bad flakes in the same place. Nothing helped Once my diet changed the flakes improved and have been gone for a year now.

A friend had the same thing too.

Loocheeyar · 24/05/2021 22:10

Olaplex or pureplex dupe have worked so far for me

AppleDumplin · 24/05/2021 22:13

What's got rid of mine is a really good scrub with a scalp massager whilst hair is dry to loosen all the flakes then wash and condition with anti dandruff shampoos.

I'm using Body shop ginger at the mo but nizoral has worked in the past.

devuskums · 24/05/2021 22:18

Son got it terribly. He now uses t gel, I have been amazed at the improvement. Hope you find a solution Flowers

pinksummer · 24/05/2021 22:28

Philip Kingsley dandruff shampoo works best for me. Use it regularly until it clears then you only need it once a week at most. They also do a matching scalp tonic which is very good.

ChrisQuean · 24/05/2021 22:32

Nizoral. Really worked for me.

Badgertadger · 24/05/2021 22:39

T gel coal tar stuff as per the bottle until it clears then Averno shampoo (with an occasional coal tar treatment).

For the aveeno, buy it online - you can usually find it at about £7 if you buy in bulk.

Premier12 · 24/05/2021 22:41

Nizoral

MamaWeasel · 24/05/2021 22:45

Are your eyebrows affected too? I was thinking you may have seborrheic dermatitis....may be worth popping along to your gp just to get it checked out/get some advice.

DarlingWithoutYou · 25/05/2021 12:14

Nope not my eyebrows thankfully.

Teen Dd gets it occasionally. We keep a small spray bottle of apple cider vinegar in the bathroom and give her scalp a spray before shampooing. Just for a couple of washes and it’s fine for another few months. I suppose it’s just a matter of waiting to see if she grows out of it.

I spray my scalp occasionally and, boy, is my hair bouncing after that wash.

Nizoral. Nizoral. Nizoral.

It used to only be on prescription only for dandruff but now is over the counter. It's amazing.

MoominKitty · 25/05/2021 20:40

I've suffered terrible dandruff for years, used all the lotions and potions coal tar, head and shoulders etc.

Was recommended this last month and its magic not a flake since first use!

Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush, Soft Silicone No Flaky Hair Scalp Brush for Wet or Dry Hair, Head Scrubber Scalp Exfoliator Anti Dandruff Brush (Black) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08DKJYP5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_glt_fabc_WPX7TN11X10MPHCPHZEH?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I lather the shampoo, still use H&S, then firmly use that to really scrub my scalp all over, and I use it when rinsing, then condition and use it again on the final rinse.

Honestly it's magic! No more itch or snow falls when I move my head!

MerryInthechelseahotel · 25/05/2021 21:14

Nizoral for sure! Brilliant stuff. You can't use it if you are pregnant though

This is what I use too- has completely cleared my flaky scalp too. I use it on my dry hair first then when I've got the shampoo on too.

Another vote for Nizoral. Managed to get in as part of my online food shop from supermarket so didn't even need to go to a pharmacy.
Out of nowhere I too started getting huge flakes at the front of my parting and scrubbing/generic shampoo/oil didn't get rid of it. Recommend using it after your normal shampoo and leaving in for a couple of minutes in the scalp before rinsing and conditioning. Massively reduced within a few washes. Hoping it stays away even once I've finished the bottle.

Not sure if it's a different version but the Nizoral I used said it was fine in pregnancy according to the leaflet in the box.
