Anyone else's nails grow too fast for gel?

I'm fed up of my nails snagging and ripping. I love the idea of having them done professionally but each time I do, the grow so fast and my hair gets trapped near the cuticle. They last around 5-7 days before I have to take them off.

They’re not being done correctly if hair can get trapped - this means they’re lifting. Try a different nail salon, make sure they remove your cuticles really well, and they don’t let product touch the skin around the nail. That way, as they grow out there won’t be any lifting. Also ask for gel builder as the base coat.
Mine last for at least 3 weeks.

Yes, I have a visible gap at the bottom of mine after a week or so that looks awful. I’ve actually given up having them done- they look so bad so quickly it’s not worth the cost or the faff to remove. I find you can get a good enough finish with regular polish if you have a big enough brush and you use seche vite on top.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 21/05/2021 11:01

Yes mine do too. Same when shellac/similar painted. It looks good got about 5 days then there's a visible growth from the bottom that just gets more and more obvious and irritates me. I'd have to have mine done every week to 10 days to look as good as they seem to on everyone else for as long and the price (and nail damage) just isn't possible

I love having my nails done but I have to file them often for sports so can't. DH bought me the Mylee professional UV gel kit from Amazon - it's brilliant, so worth it. Loads of tutorials on YT. I can make my nails last almost 2 weeks and they look pretty professional (it's all about capping the nail!). Get the builder gel too, plus nail foils from Savers.

Yes, whenever I have shellac it looks good for about 4 days but then I get the cuticle gap. I think shellac dries the natural oiks from my nail bed so it makes the cuticle retreat, rather than the nail actually growing 3mm in a couple of days. Using a cuticle oil (or any oil) every night will give you a few more days, but I am so envious of these people who can make a manicure last 3 weeks.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 21/05/2021 22:11

Same! I make mine last 2 weeks as I can’t afford to have them done weekly!

I have a gap to after 5-7 days

I’m going to give up having them done

LadyCatStark · 21/05/2021 22:25

Yes, that’s why I got my own UV nail lamp and do them myself. Then I don’t care that I need to do them every week, I actually enjoy it.

carrottopper · 22/05/2021 06:02

I actually have my own kit but it takes me ages to do them and I get bored. I have the sensationail lamp but use blue Sky products and I was never sure how long each layer takes to set

Same here. Visible gap at the cuticle after about a week. I just do my own with regular polish..Essie Speed Setter top coat is amazing - I can get 5 days of nice shiny nails with it

Yes, exactly the same here. Or I use Essie Good to Go. My toenails and hair grow super fast too.
RacheyCat · 22/05/2021 13:33

I always get a light colour, so I don't find the cuticle gap's all that obvious, but mine seem to be chipping or breaking before I even make it to two weeks.

I reckon those white tip extensions I used to get were much hardier. I might try and get clear extensions next time to see if that helps.

Sleepyquest · 22/05/2021 13:39

Ok so Sensationail does not last anywhere near as long as bio sculpture or calgel. My bio sculpture can last 5 weeks. When I couldn't go after Christmas, they were on 6 weeks before i thought this is gross and took them off. Go professional Smile

carrottopper · 22/05/2021 15:59

Yes sensationail lasts about 5-7 days on me but so does shellac and other gels at the salon.

I have calgel and they last for 4 weeks with lifting. My nail technician is fab, with over 25 years experience.

When I couldn't go after Christmas because of lockdown mine lasted 7 weeks and 4 days. I was well chuffed.

Mine grow too fast for gel or acrylic. I do them myself with regular polish and remove it after a week.

To get a really good finish that lasts all week, use two coats of basecoat, then colour, then topcoat (I use Sally Hansen InstaDri). And leave each coat to dry thoroughly before putting on the next one.
