Hemlines down- economy crashing?

So I’ve been looking at the old adage that when hemlines drop so does the economy (Conversely when we are all in short dresses and skirts it signifies the countries prosperity),
Obviously most women have been in tight skinnies for the last 5 years so no hemline trends to speak of. Now we see the resurgence of the long dress....foretelling?

No mini skirts are back.

The long dress is always around, isn’t it? There’s always people in maxi dresses. I’m not sure they are a trend, as such, just something people wear.

Also surely any trend for maxi dresses would be countered by the trend for mini dresses right now?

I thought it was that hemlines drop when the economy crashes... not that long hemlines cause the economy to crash Grin
Anyway long dresses have been the trend for a few years now and Covid is what has crashed the economy.

A boom is forecast anyway, though the crappy weather isn't helping at the moment.
I think the days when everyone wore the same length skirts, or followed any other trend, are long gone. People like to please themselves now and designers are in trouble if they try to push particular styles too hard.

Midi/maxi dresses have been around for years! So no.

I thought historically, hemlines dropped when the economy was doing well because you could afford more material.

frogswimming · 20/05/2021 12:42

Interesting. But I'd say maxi/midi fashionable for a few years now.
