Trying on new glasses with a mask?!

Mummyongin · 18/05/2021 21:24

I need new glasses, my current ones are actually more than 10 years old 😳 and I’m desperate for something more up to date. But I can’t tell how they look in the shop with my mask on! Any tips?!

So frustrating. I was trying to buy a sunhat the other day but couldn’t at all tell if it suited me because of the bloody mask. No help sorry but sharing your annoyance. I’m glad I don’t need new glasses at the mo because I can see it would be a nightmare

Gwenhwyfar · 18/05/2021 21:35

I can't try glasses on even in normal times because I can't see myself in them if I take my own glasses off!
Is there a website for this kind of thing?

Magpiecomplex · 18/05/2021 21:38

I was allowed to take my mask off briefly when trying on new frames. Optician took photos of me in the three options without mask and then I looked at the photos after putting my own glasses back on so I could actually see them. This was an independent optician though, not sure if a chain would be equally obliging.

Specsavers have an app where you take picture of your face from front and sides and upload it, then you can 'virtually' try on all their glasses. It's pretty good - I've used it to create a shortlist of the ones I want to try on for real when I go into the shop.

My optician and the receptionist both put on the big plastic visor things so that I could take my mask off and try on glasses completely normally. The only thing that was different was that each pair couldn't be put bac on the rack afterwards but had to be sanitised first. I assumed it would be the same everywhere.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/05/2021 21:46

Thanks. I really don't have the social skills to be asking an optician staff member to take photos of me and I'd want to try on more than three and in different shops.
I've had the same glasses for about 15 years!

I chose new glasses today at specsavers and they let me lower my mask when trying on contenders. They took the losers from me and sanitised them before replacing on the rack. Was very straightforward

MaryBoBary · 18/05/2021 21:50

Specsavers allowed me to take my mask off as long as no other customers were in the area (which there weren't as they are limiting customers).

DH bought new ones at Vision Express. He didn’t have to wear a mask while trying them on facing the mirror. He could try on as many as he liked. They were then put in a tray to be kept separate from the rest of the stock.

Mummyongin · 18/05/2021 21:55

I know I can get around the blindness issue as I can wear contacts for a few hours (before my eyes start to hate them!). I’m planning to do a contact-wearing shopping trip then get my test in the place I find the glasses I want. I have a ridiculously small/narrow face so finding something that suits is worth the effort. Good to hear there are some opticians out there empathic to the dilemma! I went in a small vision express branch last week - that’s when I realised I couldn’t get any idea what frames looked like with my mask and there was clearly no allowance for brief mask removal. Hmm, might need to brave asking places if I can take my mask off - feels wrong though!

Both me and my DD have had new glasses during covid, and were allowed to take off the masks for trying the glasses on. No limits on how many we could try on.

Magpiecomplex · 18/05/2021 22:03

@Gwenhwyfar not sure if you were referring to my three options - I could have tried as many as I wanted but had narrowed it down to three first.

daisypond · 18/05/2021 22:04

Yes, DH was told the rules before he even went to the shop - when he could remove the mask, etc.

Scbchl · 18/05/2021 22:06

My daughter got two new pairs of glasses today. When she was sat down with the two pairs she'd chosen the woman told her to look in the mirror and take her mask down if she was comfortable doing that to make sure she was happy with them.

ChangingStates · 18/05/2021 22:07

Ooh, I have a very small face too op- once you find your ideal pair come back and share- will save me doing all the legwork :D
