What would you wear as a bride in your 40’s?

DS is getting married low key in august - she isn’t on here but asked for options. They’ve been together forever and teen kids but decided to do it to sort finances (and probably because they can keep it small)
What would you chose to wear if you could do it again? She fancies white/cream/pastels as it’s summer but not long. Average height, pear shaped about a 14. Loves a heal and happy to be a bit different.

What's her budget?

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/05/2021 18:44

Something a bit 50s, all nipped in waist, calf length, fabulous shoes. Or maybe a jumpsuit.

MayIDestroyYou · 16/05/2021 18:48

I have no idea whatsoever why someone marrying in their 40s shouldn't wear exactly what they might wear at 30 or 50.

Surely the only criteria to be met are budget, suitability for wedding venue, personal style, and sufficient time to choose either made to measure or off the peg?

Not whether your soon-to-be MIL thinks you're too old for wild extravagance and romance!

sorryiasked · 16/05/2021 18:49

Something embroidered, maybe like this

Standrewsschool · 16/05/2021 18:49

Cream jump suit

jumpsuit

Halter Neck dress

halter neck

dress

Thisis nice, and a bit different

starlight36 · 16/05/2021 18:53

Something she feels special and fab in. Agree a 50s style dress always looks chic but if that isn't her look maybe go for a more luxe version of what she normally wears - depending on budget of course.

I would wear a proper ivory Lacy bridal dress as I've never been married before!

AliasGrape · 16/05/2021 19:07

I got married at 40. I wore an ivory lace wedding dress - I looked good and felt amazing. It was quite a simple style, had straps, a deep v neck and a narrow a-line rather than a big poofy ball gown but that’s because that’s what suited my shape and style best.

I tried a few less obviously bridal numbers but they didn’t make me happy like the one I chose did.

Your sister should try a range of options but shouldn’t feel she has to rule anything out on account of age.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/05/2021 19:14

@MayIDestroyYou I don’t think it’s an age thing so much as as trying not to be ‘a wedding’ thing. She is quite glam though.
Budget is probably up to a grand - she’s not strapped but also she’s be happy to do an eBay £50. I like the 50’s thing for her - would it be weird to wear a bright shoe? She loves shoes.

Wedding jumpsuits! Is that really a thing? They look dreadful. Anything but that!

AliasGrape · 16/05/2021 19:14

Although that being said above - I did strongly consider something a bit like the attached pictures, but we ended up with a more ‘weddingy’ wedding than originally thought hence me ending up with a more ‘weddingy’ wedding dress. Maybe next time I’ll go for the glitzy one Wink

An hourglass or curved figure might find something of interest here:

I was forty when I married, I had a new suit made for me by a designed I had used many times before and an evening outfit with trousers which I have worn over and over again, so much so that twenty years later I commissioned a new evening jacket because the original one was becoming threadbare 😀

My choice was for a shape and style that I had had before and was comfortable in, in a more extravagant fabric than usual.

LunaNorth · 16/05/2021 19:22

I was 45 and wore this

Krook · 16/05/2021 19:22

If I was getting married now I'd want something from Alice Temperley...I love her dresses and it's the only possible justification I could have for spending that amount of money on one.

This sort of thing is lovely! I don't think I'd go fifties style, but think that's just my personal taste. Some people love and suit it.

BillieSpain · 16/05/2021 19:42

I would wear a GHOST dress. The bridal ones are classic and stunning and a total bargain in the sale.

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 20:07

That Amelie one from Hope and Ivy, just posted, is lovely. Tempted by that myself and I'm not even getting married!

OooPourUsACupLove · 16/05/2021 20:41

This was mine. I was 43. It was a £45 dress from Amazon but originally had no sleeves so I bought two and had a dressmaker use the fabric from one to make sleeves for the other. She also improved the fit for me. The petticoats were bought separately, about £30 each I think.

@OooPourUsACupLove
You look bloody gorgeous.

ODFOx · 16/05/2021 22:24

BHLDN
Some fab stuff in the sale.
Don't let her feel that she shouldn't go fabulous because they have been together a while. I've been looking at the Tadashi Shoji Didion gown in the sale and I'm not getting married: it's just so pretty!
