Question about this necklace

PresentQuestion12 · 14/05/2021 23:01

Not sure if this is the right board but would welcome opinions please.

I have a milestone birthday coming up and DH wants to buy me this necklace

I love it and think it’s a classic style but am worried it’s just so expensive. DH really wants to spoil me as I’ve been a daily carer for a close relative on top of work etc.

Also I have no idea if these are super popular and if they are then it’s probably not for me as I prefer to be lower key.

Hope you don’t mind me asking. It’s a genuine post, not a stealth boast, so please be kind. I just don’t want DH to dive in and buy it in if it might not be right for me.

@PresentQuestion12

Oh wow, thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I have read every post and am really grateful.

I completely agree with the comments about it being so expensive for what it is. I realise the name and design rights are the value but it’s probably a clear £2,000 profit for them.

I think I’ll have a look around and take some time.

Thanks for the video - people on ARS often look disappointed with valuations but she seemed genuinely touched. 🤗

Thanks again, everyone.

As a pp said it's not an item you can judge just by it material value. Part of the price is of course the brand but it's also the design and craftsmanship.

Personally I think it's beautiful and importantly a very versatile piece in the sense it would look just as lovely when worn with a shirt and jeans as an evening dress.

However, it's wise to take your time and look around.

By way of comparison Tiffany do a similar necklace that's (slightly) less expensive and incorporates MOP and diamonds.

Ooh please get it OP 🌸

Girlintheframe · 15/05/2021 17:19

I love it!

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/05/2021 17:29

Well I know where I'm shopping if I ever have a big lottery win.

purpleandpinkroses · 15/05/2021 17:50

I think it's a beautiful necklace but overpriced. If you love then have it as it is classic and timeless.

ODFOx · 15/05/2021 18:58

I much prefer it to the Tiffany one a pp linked.
It's a beautiful piece OP, and will give you years of wear with all manner of outfits. If your DH thinks you deserve it then you do. If you love it and he wants to buy it for you why ever not?

I prefer the VCA one also - but choices never hurt 😀

The tiffany and VC&A are both gorgeous and fairly classic.

Go for whatever brings you joy (as long as it's not putting anyone in debt)

I have a few slightly outrageous purchases and they bring me proper joy. I really don't care if anyone else likes them, I love them all.

I think that's the perfect attitude towards such a gift Thanks

It’s like the Tiffany silver stuff i.e. incredibly expensive for what it actually is. Don’t buy it thinking it’ll be an heirloom that will increase in value. Buy it because you absolutely love it.

Poppins2016 · 16/05/2021 03:58

If you 100% love it and have no doubts, then go for it.

If not, just Google 'quatrefoil mother of pearl necklace' and have a look at similar pieces without the mark up!

LittleLottieChaos · 16/05/2021 07:24

You can definitely find a prettier and better priced alternative. I’d go vintage or antique.

To those saying it would ‘hold it’s value’ - it won’t, they’re so cheaply mass produced - if I were offering on this second hand I’d say you wouldn’t get more than £800. But that’s how mark ups work, so meh - just don’t ever buy branded jewellery thinking you’re going to make your money back selling it one day.

So lovely you get to choose something special. 😊

Anonmousse · 16/05/2021 07:57

I work as a jeweller and high end brand prices are about the name, advertising , luxury shops and reputation as much as the jewellery.

I think it's a gorgeous necklace.Smile

We have made similar things (same weight or size and quality of diamond or gemstone in same quality of metal) for customers who have seen things in VC&A ,or tiffany etc, for around half or a third of the cost, but they dont get a plush showroom or a glass of champagne with the experience!

frazzledasarock · 16/05/2021 10:02

With VCA the jewellery will hold its value you’re paying for the brand and yo can hand it down and it will still be worth a lot of money.

If you buy a generic one from an unknown shop you’ll get the scrap value of the metals, if you swap out the mother of Pearl for diamond unless it’s a huge diamond you’ll get nothing. Diamonds have practically no re-sale value at all.

If your husband wants to treat you let him. It’s a beautiful necklace.

PegasusReturns · 16/05/2021 11:50

@LittleLottieChaos lots of commentators state that VCA, especially Alhambra, retains 75-120% retail value.

LittleLottieChaos · 16/05/2021 12:04

I work in jewellery and have done for 10 years. I know from first hand experience that our buyer would never offer that much. But it’s very clever the way they sell these items as retaining value... you’ll find that the multi motif Alhambra can ‘sell well’ at auction but account into those sale prices a 30% auction fee.

As the Alhambra can still be purchased new - why buy second hand? Most people that come to sell their jewellery are in need of the £££ and won’t be offered near their purchase price. Those are the facts and I’m happy to share my knowledge.

LittleLottieChaos · 16/05/2021 12:05

Oops forgot to @PegasusReturns 😊

PegasusReturns · 16/05/2021 12:41

@LittleLottieChaos isn’t the point that they introduce different versions and the “old” versions become coveted - much like with Chanel handbags or Rolex watches - and therefore sell for over the original asking price? Or are you distinguishing between pieces that are no longer available?

I’m not sure that most people selling VCA are doing it because they need the money. Particularly not original owners. They are selling because they’re bored of it/have upgraded/need space in the safe etc.
