Help me decide what to do with my hair! Awkward Greys and balayage combo

Hi,

I have dark brown hair with a year old balayage, which is turning quite brassy. I also have quite a few greys scattered at my parting, which really stand out!

I have decided I don't want any permanent dyes touching my roots. I don't mind highlights/balayage, but I'm trying to avoid nasty chemicals on my scalp. Particularly as it's a long time commitment.

Had a consultation with a hairdresser who specialises is balayage and she of course suggested more balayage, but didn't think a semi on my roots would give me much coverage, so a waste of time potentially. My hair is quite dry and broken in some parts though, from the previous bleach and heat styling.

I'm really tempted to do a semi box dye and just go all one colour, cover the balayage and accept that not all my grey will be covered. I don't mind that odd one and I think I'd rather that than committing to bleach and PPD based root touch ups.

I do love a caramel/chocolate balayage though...

Thoughts? Suggestions?

TIA

Sorry I never had a balayage and I'm no expert, but I think your idea with using a good quality semi/demi permanent colour is a good one. You mentioned your hair is dry and these are less harsh, they mostly wash off so if you don't like it you can always go back to having a balayage without too much additional damage to your hair. You mention PPD, I developed an allergy after years of using both permanent and demi dyes- so if it's something you want to avoid it's worth checking out the particular dye you're planning on using.
