Art Smart

I have a reservation for Sketch restaurant and from looking at their website they state dress code is 'art smart'. I have absolutely no idea what this means other than basing my look on a given art movement. Thinking black polo and beret? Would anybody happen to have an idea as to what's acceptable attire at Sketch?

Which restaurant? Gallery or Lecture Room?

Gallery is more casual. I think art smart is just a way of saying edgy smart casual.

Amazing, extremely useful. Its a good excuse to go out my comfort zone. Off to order some velvet DMs......

Wear something you can get on and off quickly and is comfy.

If you’re eating in The Gallery then your toilet cubicle is basically a selfie prop and it’s very disconcerting to be trying to climb back into a jumpsuit while a pack of giggling girls stage a photo shoot on the other side of the door.

If you’re in the Lecture Room the mirrored toilets are less than flattering, something I found out when I was doubled over trying to get the poppers of a bodysuit to snap shut again.

Plus the food is so amazing you’re going to eat like a pig.

Wasn't there someone on S&B very recently who was going to Sketch and judging by the suggestions and recommendations being made, they definitely did not get the art smart memo.

I've have mid-week cocktails there and there was a very mixed crowd in terms of fashion. I was there with a colleague and we actually work in the arts! If only we'd known...

The pod toilets are an experience and I adore the David Shrigley's in the restaurant.

If you go during the weekend, you are mostly going to run into a “bridge and tunnel” crowd. They are often less dressy. I went one weekend and people were wearing jeans and cotton tops. I felt overdressed.

Hmm... I would ignore that pretentious blog. IME it's Londoners who wear jeans and the out of towners who dress up to the nines. Don't go rocking up with a giant floral head piece like she suggests

It's just smart casual in the library and lecture room - no trainers, smart jeans are ok, I think jackets are required for men.

The outfit

Never heard of it but I've Googled some pictures of Sketch and they show most customers wearing fairly ordinary clothes. I suppose wear something slightly flamboyant, particularly on your top half as that will be visible above the table.

Wow, I’ve just looked at their Instagram and now I really want to go (despite my pretentious comment 😂).

I've just read the review of the actual visit on that Luxe website and I'm puzzled by this comment:

"given that we went on 18 February (the day many in the UK wear Christmas sweaters to work), quite a few individuals were wearing goofy holiday sweaters."

18 February is Christmas jumper day?? Or was it just a novelty event in that restaurant. From the language on the site I assume the writer is American so perhaps she thought it was a national thing?

Probably horribly outing but when I last went between lockdowns 1 and 2 a lady was wearing such a low cut top that when she went to use her knife and fork both very substantial tits literally popped out. Neither art nor smart so presumably part of the “bridge and tunnel crowd”. All credit to her though, she found it hilarious and just tucked them back in.
