Do cropped jeans suit anyone except models?

OK so I'm over skinnier. Uncomfortable and starting to look dated imo. Need new jeans.
But everything is cropped! I'm a short arse pear shape and it just makes me look dumpy and bottom heavy! Also I'm 45 and I think I look try hard!
Do they actually work on anyone?
What could I wear instead to update my look?

No, I agree they only work on skinny 20 year olds.
I don’t know what to wear either.. mom jeans look terrible on most people.

Oly4 · 12/05/2021 11:04

The only ones I’ve found to flatter me that aren’t skinnies are the M&S Harper straight leg. They are flattering

Floisme · 12/05/2021 11:13

I love this trend because I have decent ankles, in fact they're the best part of my legs. I have to fiddle and fuss to get exactly the length I want, which is right at the top/thinnest point of my ankle. Definitely not mid calf - that does make my legs look shorter.

I'm switching between straight leg and barrel/balloon shape which I really like, partly because I don't remember wearing it before.

I'm 64, 5'3, fairly slim, pear-hourglass's shape.

There was a good thread recently in jeans although it's dropped out of sight now.

Floisme · 12/05/2021 11:13

Sos, 'about jeans'

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 12/05/2021 11:14

I really like them but I'm taller (5ft 9") so that may make a difference - though I am nowhere near being a model or my 20s !!
Would wide leg / flare shape work better fit you

Miseryisabutterfly · 12/05/2021 11:17

They suited me prelockdown when I was an 8. I’m a 12 now and I’m not going to attempt them. I’m 5’8”. I don’t have good ankles but they worked with flat sandals and boots.

Miseryisabutterfly · 12/05/2021 11:18

Completely misread the op. I was thinking of cropped wide leg trousers. I wear other cropped trousers still at my current size!

pinkearedcow · 12/05/2021 11:26

I recently bought Fatface girlfriend jeans and I love them. I am 5'3 and bought the regular length so can I roll them to exactly where I want them, just above the ankle. Any higher than that and I look dumpy (also I am a bit cankle-y). They are so much nicer than skinnies and feel more modern.

I will keep skinnies for winter, tucked into boots. It rains a lot where I live and so function over fashion has to win sometimes!

Chewbecca · 12/05/2021 11:26

I hope so as I am short and dumpy and I wear them. I have very thick legs but I do have ankles.

I have some, straight fit new ones from Next this year which I’m really pleased with, the denim is soft & they are comfy. They will be my everyday go to soon.

Serpenta · 12/05/2021 11:30

Cropped to just above the ankle I find quite flattering. Cropped to mid-calf or pedal-pusher length, definitely not.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 12/05/2021 11:32

Fellow short arse here - buy cropped from the "Tall" section and you'll get a nice pair of proper length high waisted jeans. 👍🏻

ILoveShula · 12/05/2021 12:17

They are not for me. I'm average height, slim and don't have long legs.
I would probably look fine in mom jeans.

IrmaFayLear · 12/05/2021 12:23

Often “cropped” is normal length on me. If you peer at the descriptions on a website you see “model is 5’11”” and wears size 8” . Hopeless!

Then comes the problem of footwear. Ankle length with a sandal or converse-type thing is ok, but if you wear a shoe more suited to current (grim) weather then you look like an idiot, with half-mast trousers. And at serious risk of reenacting the bootcut with mum boot look.

Floisme · 12/05/2021 12:23

I thought this was quite a good thread as it talked about different shapes and brands and also what tops and shoes to wear with them (which is part of the problem I think when you switch from skinnies). Quite a lot of love for some of the M&S styles although I've not tried any myself.
As for looking too 'try hard', all I can suggest is not to care. Smile

IrmaFayLear · 12/05/2021 12:26

Thanks - I’ll take a look at that. I bought some balloony M&S jeans on a MN recommendation - I looked like the Michelin man. All that excess material gaping round the crotch was not flattering.

StevieNix · 12/05/2021 12:37

I’m late twenties- I refuse to give up skinny jeans. I’m ok with a teeny bit cropped skinny jeans but no other style suits my pear shape dumpy body Grin
You can yell at me until your blue in the face that bootcut etc is supposed to look better/more flattering on me - they just don’t!

Lookdeepintotheparka · 12/05/2021 17:02

I took a pair of cropped jeans back last week. They looked truly terrible - made my calves seem huge as they were just the wrong length. I feel cropped is a style that's hard to get right especially as a small person!

I always wear ankle length rolled up relaxed skinny or straight jeans. I am bored though as been wearing this style for years! I have short legs and skinny jeans never suited me (parsnip legs Grin)

I might try bootcut again - to me they still seem dated but loved them in the 90s Grin

PandoraP · 12/05/2021 17:14

I am on the jeans fence at the moment. I look ridiculous in most jeans in fashion at moment. I am still wearing skinny and I welcome bootcut back. You just need the right fit and they are extremely flattering I think.

EllaPaella · 12/05/2021 17:25

Well I think they suit me and I'm far from a 20 year old skinny model.
Do you mean any cropped jean or so you specifically mean the wide leg crops? I can't get away with the wide leg ones as they just don't hang well on me but my straight leg cropped jeans and cropped boyfriend jeans look good (I think so anyway).

Confusedandshaken · 12/05/2021 17:30

I love cropped jeans. I'm a very petite apple shape with slim legs and ankles so cropped jeans with a top that covers my belly is a flattering look for me.

FourTurnings · 12/05/2021 17:44

Yes, they suit me. I love them and wear them all the time.
