If you were going to get one designer handbag to last for life, which one would it be?

Just that, really! I’m looking for a classic bag and would like something I could keep in the rotation and still look chic using in 15-20 years. Obviously the Chanel 2.55 and the classic Birkin come to mind (though the latter is definitely out of my budget), but what others are there to consider? Bonus points for versatility. Mulberry Bayswater perhaps?

Birkins are beautiful, but even if I was a gazillionaire, I can't imagine dropping 20 grand on a bag that you can't even sling onto your shoulder!

Ahhh another bag thread!

Op there are so many lovely designs that you can choose from.

I have no bag loyalty whatsoever. I have owned and sold on Hermes ( might buy another garden party again soon but I didn't get on with the evelyne due to the thick strap). The quality is unparalleled though.

Someone mentioned a lady Dior upthread, these are gorgeous bags and don't seem to date - ( I've got two and use them a fair bit).

I have 5 Chanel bags. Not a fan of the classic flaps although I do have two 19's which may become another classic. My grey one is goat skin and is pretty bombproof. They can look as amazing worn causally as they can on a night out.

I'm a huge Chanel wallet on chain fan too, I put a woc saver in the bottom and you can get twice as much in. It's a brilliant small crossbody bag.

I'm also a member of several groups on Facebook where like minded ladies buy and sell, they often have them authenticated before selling. For peace of mind for their buyer. I have only bought one bag brand new and that was my last Dior from the Dior boutique in Selfridges, I also visited the Chanel boutique whilst I was there but I couldn't see anything I wanted as much as the lady Dior.

LV can be nice, I have owned a couple also but sold them on as they aren't for me, the ones in the Empirente leather are the nicest though imvho.

Ultimately if you want an every day bag that will last years and years just do a bit of research, ask around.

I love Ysl and I do have a couple of old mulberry's I love about 5 mins from their outlet store in Somerset. I don't like their new stuff much though.

I can also recommend a lower price point but excellent understated value called Aspinal, I have quite a few of these bags and they are beautiful - their sales are amazing too!

Good luck finding your dream bag, it's such a lovely thing to buy.

I have a number of postalco bags and they wear very well. (the modern aesthetic I know won’t be to everyone’s taste). It’s worth it!
