I hate mascara!

I am have really fine, fair hair and eyelashes and I look loads better with mascara but I really hate wearing it. It always makes my lashes clump together and just feels horrible. I'm rubbish at applying it and usually get it in places I shouldn't because when I blink it just smudges everywhere. It's a right old faff. I have to wear something on my eyes otherwise they just disappear and I look tired. So I've taken to just drawing a line of eyeliner under my eye. I'm not sure this looks great though but it's better than nothing.

My question is, am I just using the wrong mascara, should I persevere? Can anyone recommend one that doesn't cost the earth. I'm currently using body shop one which is awfully clumpy, I've previously used number 7 which is better but that isn't great either.

Dior Pump and Volume
I have white pathetic eyelashes. This is my holy grail. One coat, doesn't clump or give me a panda look after 5 minutes like others (including all the Benefit ones, and Lancome ones) or need 8 coats before you see a difference (Clinique "high" impact)

I think Maybelline Great Lash is a good thin mascara, for a natural look. I don't use it as I prefer NYX waterproof which holds my lashes after I've curled them (they are beyond straight!) but in my quest for the best mascara I used the Maybelline as well as most others.

The other thing is maybe get your lashes permed and dyed? My daughters have this done and it looks great. They have just bought the kit to do it themselves after their friends having good results with it.

Thanks, is this the right one? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283880420206?epid=16031902250&hash=item421897736e:g:dWAAAOSw3dRev825

Would you consider getting your lashes tinted? Game changer for me! Costs me about £10 every 6 weeks or so and only takes about 15 mins.

JustGiveMeGin · 06/05/2021 08:41

It's all in the application! If you can't get that right (YouTube videos might help you?) then definitely get them permed and dyed professionally, I think a line of random eyeliner is not going to look great.

I love MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara in Gigablack. I find it is predominately lengthening and separating, with a touch of volume so my lashes don't look clumpy but soft and fluttery. I have oily eyelids and don't find that this transfers or smudges on me.

If transferring is a huge problem for you then you might want to consider a waterproof mascara - though these are much more difficult to remove.

I would also recommend you looking into your application technique, brush the mascara through right from the root of the lash, I like to hold and wiggle the wand as the roots before pulling it through the rest. I recommend Lisa Eldridge on YouTube for tutorials.

If mascara is something you just really don't get on with then as PP have said getting your lashes tinted and permed could give your eyes a more defined look without the daily struggle. But seriously, if you don't like the way it looks, or feels on you then don't worry!

Try Benefit's tinted primer instead. It goes on much softer than a mascara and isn't irritating or clumpy. Application of mascara is always better if you curl your lashes first too.

That's the fella, but that price looks too good to be true to me. It's about £25 in real life. And worth every penny!

Tianatiers · 06/05/2021 09:06

Thanks for all the great advice, lots to look into!

Try Estée Lauder double wear zero-smudge lengthening mascara. It goes on easily and then doesn't move!

Alternatively you could get your eyelashes to tinted. I have similar colouring to you and always get mine done to go on holiday.

Tianatiers · 06/05/2021 09:08

Thanks @Geamhradh I thought the same about the price, saw some more around the £25 mark but wasn't sure the difference.

I have really long eyelashes and wear glasses. When I cared about such things ( when I worked) I would have my lashes dyed brown black. Made a big difference and wasn't overly expensive

CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove · 06/05/2021 09:14

Lash tint (and lift) has been a game changer for me. I would wear mascara every day as it was the one thing that really made a difference to make me look awake/not miserable...but don't need any with the lash lift/tint

RacheyCat · 06/05/2021 09:45

Chanel Inimitable for me, non-waterproof in brown. Easy to apply, doesn't smudge, and washes off in the shower.
