How do I choose a lipstick that suits me?

I never usually wear lipstick but would like to, however I’m struggling to choose the right shade for me.

I’m quite pale (with a pink undertone), with blonde hair and blue eyes. My lips are naturally quite full and red. I have slightly yellow teeth (or at least not completely white) and am quite self conscious of them so would like a colour that makes them appear “whiter” (or at least doesn’t accentuate yellowing).

Bought a colour the other day but it was way too pink and dark and I don’t like it. It also made my lips look quite chapped. Are you supposed to moisturise your lip beforehand? I’m wondering whether a lip gloss would be better as I don’t like the dry/matte look...

I don’t think you can get lipstick samples and I can’t get to shops at the moment so have to order online.

Any tips for choosing a non-matte lipstick/lipgloss in a subtle colour (nothing too red or dark) for a pale blonde woman?

I don’t wear much other make up (just tinted moisturiser and some mascara), I just want to give my lips a bit of extra colour.

Any advice appreciated!

I've been blonde for years and recently turned brunette. Velvet teddy by MAC is my go too I love it

I had the same problem as you, I am have very pale skin and found lipstick always looked wrong. I went on YouTube and some YouTuber recommended mac velvet teddy for a good starting out neutral shade and I love it.

Benefit lip tint - suits lots of different skin tones etc, looks subtle but you could build it for a stronger colour, there’s a couple of shades to chose from (the original benetint is my favourite) and a little goes a long way- the one I’ve had has lasted me for years!

how pigmented are your natural lips? because that will affect how these lipsticks look on you, I have heavily pigmented lips ( mac mehr almost matches perfectly) so any lipstick looks a bit closer to "a bit much" than on others

Try Clarins
If you go on their website & use your camera, you can virtually try on lipstick colours, it's very clever

Your the same colouring as myself blue undertones in red lipsticks look lovely Mac ruby woo also Chanel allure no 1 is lovely !
If u want more natural go for a subtle cool pink that looks similar to your actual lip colour xx

I’m same colouring, very pale, very light blonde hair.
This is terrific for everyday. Never looks harsh or overdone, just enough natural colour to stop me looking washed out, very moisturising. Not expensive, often on offer.
The shade Daydreamer.

Have a play with a virtual try on - Mac have one but other make up sites do as well. It uses your phone camera to try on lots of different shades and types. Will give you a good list to try on properly in store, and might surprise you as to what suits you.
