Sunday Times 'STYLE' magazine

Is it just me who is astounded this unrelatable shite is given space in this paper ?

This week was a particular low point- jewels that costs thousands, grim frilly nonsense and day glow eyeliner from a writer who is surely taking the piss.

The interiors are all-so-unique mid century modern bollocks that Argos is punting out.

There seems to be an invasion of human interest stories spilling over from other areas. Nothing to do with style.

How are the feckers getting away with peddling this shite?

Can't they employ some people who actually understand what their general readership is looking for sartorial wise?

I agree that this week was particularly bad.

Interestingly, the fashion coverage in the T2 section of the Times every Wednesday is a lot better.

Ponks · 25/04/2021 14:10

It's lost it's way with so much filler. Would be better as part of the main Sunday Times magazine.

Annasgirl · 25/04/2021 14:15

I gave up on the Sunday Times about a month ago - for the final time!! A particular Style columnist featured in the AIBU coupled with the surrogacy promotion finished me off.

I concur with all of your comments though. I remember when it was really relevant. I think the loss of the last editor - Jane somebody - was the death knell.

Supersimkin2 · 25/04/2021 14:31

There is a brilliant editor there called Lesley White who always hits the nail on the head. She delivered the stuff you didn’t know you needed to know or buy (and could afford).

I wish she’d come back to the glossy bits.

thebabessavedme · 25/04/2021 15:59

Yep, this is the last weekend I will be buying the Sunday Times, fashion is rubbish, interiors are just product adverts and as for IK, well, enough said.

MakeTeaNotWar · 25/04/2021 16:12

@Annasgirl Lorraine Candy? There's a new editor now, Lorraine was the last one. I think it was Jackie before that, then Tiffanie Darke

LoveFromDeauville · 25/04/2021 18:36

Lorraine Candy? She has teenage daughters you know (never fails to mention them). 🙄I have a subscription- am overseas- but rarely read it these days.

Annasgirl · 25/04/2021 19:02

Yes @MakeTeaNotWar that was her! And yes @LoveFromDeauville she always mentioned them 😂 but as I have a teen DD I didn’t mind. I also had a big gap between my oldest and youngest like her.

confuseddotcom090 · 25/04/2021 19:34

I agree. Total dross.

I am deeply uncomfortable about that woman with her surrogate baby. It makes me feel queasy. She is the epitome of entitled.,

Dolly Alderton advice page usually v sensible though.

Skinfulnappies46 · 25/04/2021 19:47

Definitely suss that every week IK waxes lyrical about a new wonder product she could not live with . I mean ,do they think the readers are so gullible. I’m dine with it too.

Skinfulnappies46 · 25/04/2021 19:48

Done

Confusedandshaken · 25/04/2021 20:13

I always read the style section first mostly just to marvel at how completely irrelevant it all is to my life. Then I move on to the interesting bits of the paper.

Incidentally, I think IK must be sponsored by the Norfolk tourist board. Barely an issue goes by that she doesn't mention that she lives in bucolic bliss in East Anglia.

hopeishere · 25/04/2021 20:23

I noticed Rosie "I'm divorced" Green is the new sex columnist in You. Did you know she's divorced? Talk about making the most of a bad divorce. Those brown pants she was wearing were hideous as well.

bakingdemon · 25/04/2021 20:39

Same here! I never buy glossy magazines so I flick through it to marvel at how full of shite they are and how miserable everyone looks in the adverts, then move on to the Sunday Times Magazine, which is usually full of interesting articles and much more insightful interviews. Although I did nearly give up on Style when under Lorraine Candy's editorship Raven Smith was a columnist - they actually printed a column in which he used the word 'breeders' to refer to women. In a women's magazine.
AprilLady · 25/04/2021 21:35

@confuseddotcom090, out of interest, what makes you deeply confused about Sophie Beresiner and her surrogate baby. How long have you followed her story?

I agree some of her more recent columns have been mildly irritating, but having followed her story for years (for a long time she did a column in the Saturday Weekend section, writing about her tough journey to motherhood) I don’t regard her as particularly entitled?

Agree IK is obviously plugging stuff, she writes much better general opinion pieces in the main paper.

Gunpowder · 25/04/2021 21:47

I feel sad about Style too. It was so fun and aspirational in my teens and early twenties and they did gorgeous fashion editorial. It was always irreverent but now the whole tone of it is just affected. It feels like they know that you know they are trying to sell you over priced shit on crappy Fabulous mag style paper but they don’t really give a toss about it. I suppose it’s cuts. Sad

Agree Dolly’s column is fab though and I liked her piece on weddings too.

borntobequiet · 25/04/2021 22:11

It was complete dross years ago, I’m surprised it’s still going.

bendmeoverbackwards · 25/04/2021 22:26

I agree, I really enjoy the Wednesday T2
Irishterrier · 25/04/2021 22:34

Agree. Mid century interiors are SO boring and ubiquitous, and I also find Sophie Beresiner unlikeable despite the tough times she's had.

Much prefer the Sunday Times mag - more original and interesting.

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 25/04/2021 22:48

I gave up on the Sunday Times and now only buy on a Saturday. I've always found things in Style to be so expensive as to be ludicrous rather than aspirational

lovelychops · 25/04/2021 23:19

Funny I quite enjoy it! I'd read anything with Dolly Alderton in though....
I don't find the fashion less appealing than any magazine I buy, it's always more to.look at ideas rather than things I can afford !
I don't mind India Kinght either, she recommended nivea soft one time which is cheap as chips. I don't think it's unreasonable that she can recommend a new product each week, plenty of beauty writers do it.

Supersimkin2 · 26/04/2021 16:51

My recommendation to all those weary of Argos-style lampshades that cost £1k and 10k spike heels; Times Weekend section.

Weekend is useful as well as cheery and up to date.

LoveFromDeauville · 26/04/2021 20:28

I am not a fan of the surrogacy writer either. I mean, she has the baby now. How long can she string out the column for?

Clymene · 26/04/2021 20:32

Many women are uncomfortable about renting another woman's womb to buy a baby. Lots of women are unhappily living with infertility. Very few of them decide that surrogacy (banned in most European countries) is an ethical solution.

I'm ditching the Times too. So much filler. And I resent paying IK's wages

mammmamia · 26/04/2021 20:56

I am a huge and lifelong Times fan and grew up devouring Style in my teens and 20s.
I can’t bear it now, I thought it was just less relevant to me after having DC in my early 30s but it’s just dross.

Don’t like IK. Don’t like the surrogate lady either. Big issue but the column isn’t particularly well written and I just find it boring. Compare to some of the columnists in the main Times especially Melanie Reid on a Saturday.

I love the Saturday times though and T2 is excellent on a weekday.
