Coffee as hair dye?!

ShangPie · 22/04/2021 06:14

I read a random thing online about using strong coffee and grounds to make a natural tint for dark hair. Is there anything to it, or is it just internet nonsense?
If anyone has done it, is it successful? Any tips / recipes?

I read (but never tried) coffee in henna .
There's someone on MN who makes an infusion with tea and herbs but its a golden tones .

Many years ago I used to make up a sage infusion ( dried sage , hot water let it steep , strain and use in the rinse ) It was nice , made my hair shiney , if you don't mind smelling sage-y

I have heard of coffee grounds as hair dye but never tried it. If you have a walnut tree close by, the green fruity part around the nut dyes your hair a dark brown really well. Be sure to wear gloves while you handle the fruit because it can stain your hands for ages.

Thanks! I don’t have access to walnuts apart from in the supermarket, but good to know if I ever become a foraging queen of the woods Grin

Have been drinking a LOT of coffee as I get back into a work routine and have so many grounds I’ve been looking for ideas for them. I tried a body scrub and it made me go a bit brown (i.e. dirty, not a nice tan!) so I was hoping to use the dirty brown effect to tone down the orange in my old highlights (and hopefully tone in the greys a bit - a girl can dream)

I wonder if strong black tea would do the same?

wizzywig · 22/04/2021 11:09

Yep, I've heard it being done in Pakistani communities. Using instant coffee too

Can you put coffee grounds in a compost heap ?

ShangPie · 22/04/2021 13:01

Sad urbanite with no compost heap access Sad, so it’s either use them for weird home beauty projects or bin them
