What do you consider a cheap perfume?

I wear Dior Addict because I’ve loved it for years. A friend remarked recently that she thought it was a “cheap perfume”, I don’t think she knew that it was my favourite when she said this.

I don’t consider it cheap, and was a bit Hmm because I think it’s just around the normal range, maybe on the expensive side for everyday. When I was on maternity leave I wore Britneys Fantasy which I do consider cheap but I do like the sweet smelling ones. It’s more an everyday smell.

What do you consider to be a kind of average expense on perfume?

@MissBattleaxe - sorry, but you mentioned Avon.... I LOVED Premier Luxe Gold blush, that they have now discontinued. Is there anything you can recommend that smells exactly the same? Never had so many compliments... (other than, perhaps, Gucci Envy - another lost scent..)

Does anyone know if there a website where you can input all your favourites and the sort of fragrances you like which would throw out a list of 'If you like X, you may like Y', So that I at least have a place to start?

@MrsToddsShortcut www.fragrantica.com does exactly that.
It also helps you realise that you are drawn to fragrances with say, jasmine, or pear, or that you hate patchouli or oakmoss for example.

Search up your favourite perfume there, you'll see what other perfumes are enjoyed by people who like it too, and you'll be able to take a look at the perfume notes and composition.

@PolaDeVeboise I am a massive Avon fan as you'll see from my blog www.iscentyouaday.com (I can link it as I've got a Mumsnet blog badge)

I haven't tried Premier Luxe Gold Blush, but you've clearly got excellent taste because according to Fragrantica ( and I agree with all who recommend it) it smells similar to Narciso Rodriguez For Her.

By the way, Avon has a range called Avon Artistique where they use world class perfumers. The two I tried recently were Oud Grandeur and Ambre Ardent which are both by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, who has also made perfume for Dolce &Gabbana, Elizabeth Arden and Tom Ford. They're £15 each and fab.

@PolaDeVeboise Also, I mourned Gucci Envy too. We're not alone because when I wrote a post about the madness of its disappearance I received hundreds of comments saying the same thing. Why? i even wrote to Gucci but they just said "try our other ones". iscentyouaday.com/2013/04/24/gucci-envy-its-madness-i-tell-you/

I don't usually recommend dupes but since Gucci Envy is out of production I can recommend Eden perfumes No 42. I've got one and it's a dead ringer. edenperfumes.co.uk/24-products/women-s/floral/220-no-042-nv-floral-green-women-s

Over £100 a bottle is what I consider a considered purchase but just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's no good.

I get more comments about the £15 next perfume I wear than I do about my chanel or Jo malone. Also I use to wear the original Mariah Carey perfume and got lovely comments every time I wore it, it was about £25.

Dior Addict is one of my favourite perfumes ever, not cheap maybe because it's vanila based your friend deems it cheap. Total snobbery imo. She sounds like a loser!

MissBattleaxe · 02/05/2021 02:28

YY There's no room for snobbery in perfume as far as I'm concerned. Someone I know that is an expert in perfume recognised what they thought was Molinard Habanita only to find it was Roja Dove Scandal.

GreyhoundG1rl · 02/05/2021 02:32

Interesting thread.

MissBattleaxe · 02/05/2021 02:35

Habanita is around £40 for 75ml EDP and Roja Dove Scandal is £375 per 50 ml

I am so glad I started this thread. For both validation purposes and recommendation purposes. I think she probably is a snob tbh, it’s about the smell, not the price. How can you put a price on one of your senses.

I used to absolutely love Nina Ricci Les Belles de Ricci when I was a teenager and I’m pretty sure that was the low end of the market. But I adored it so much, I would still be buying that instead of Dior now if it was still around.

My Nan used to wear Lancôme perfumes and even though they suited her the under stones don't smell right on me. I suit a cheaper scent - Paul Smith Rose, for example - as it is less complex iyswim? And yet I love complex perfumes on others.

somethingischasingme · 02/05/2021 09:37

Under stones???? Under tones 😬
