What was you low iron related hair loss like?

I’m currently having hair loss issues investigated. My hair has always been fine and thin but in the last 6-12 months I’ve definitely lost thickness from my ponytail and have thinning at the temples. One temple is worse than the other. I’ve never had clumps of hair coming out I do seem to find hair everywhere.

First GP dismissed my concerns but second GP agreed something might be wrong, referred me to a dermatologist and ordered a couple of lots of blood tests. First lot of tests were all fine and it’s not a thyroid issue. Second lot of tests were for hormone and iron levels. Got a call from the surgery the day after the tests to make an appointment to discuss the results. Apparently hormone results were fine but iron as ‘abnormal’. I tried to ask for my ferritin levels but they wouldn’t tell me over the phone.

I do have pretty heavy periods so I’m guessing my levels are low (I know high iron can cause similar symptoms to low iron).

Does this sound similar to iron related hair issues others have had?

Strangely I’m sort of relieved for the abnormal results. At least if the hair loss is due to low iron it will likely grow back.

I have had bloods done this week to investigate hair loss- mine is at the front of my head. The results suggested my iron is low so doc has prescribed tablets and wants to re-test in 3 months. They didn’t say anything about my thyroid (although that’s what I was told they were testing for!)

I feel the same about the abnormal result- the doctor was clear with me before the test that if it showed no abnormalities there would be nothing they could do, so referred me to websites for alopecia. I’m hoping that as low iron is treatable it might mean the hair grows back.

Mine was all over...it got very thin and lank at one point and it's always been thick to the point of being bushy, so I really noticed it.

It's back to normal now more or less.
