How to zip up your own dress

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 13:13

I bought this dress online and it arrived today. www.marksandspencer.com/floral-frill-detail-midaxi-tea-dress/p/clp22526074?color=BLACKMIX I really like it (even though it's longer than it looks) but I can't do the zip up at the back. I live alone so don't have anyone to zip it up for me. Any ideas? I thought about adding some ribbon to the zip but there's no hole to thread it through. I don't want to send it back for this reason. Please help.

Is there even a tiny hole in the zip puller that you could get a safety pin through to attach a ribbon? Then remove it once the zip is up. Otherwise I'm stumped.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 13:24

No hole at all. I thought all zips had holes.

You need one of these or a cheaper version!

purpledagger · 13/04/2021 13:52

Could you replace the zip puller with one with a hole and then use a safety pin and ribbon?

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 14:42

Thanks for the replies everyone. That looks good Knittedfairies I would definitely need to find a cheaper version though!

I'm not very bendy but I can manage back zips on dresses as follows:
Put dress on
Reach behind waist and pull zip up as far as you can
Then reach backwards over shoulders with two hands
With one hand, grab top of zip/collar and pull dress up towards the top of your head - most dresses will move up about 6-8 inches
This should bring the zip pull into the reach of your other hand

I always used to go knock on a neighbour to help me out.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 14:50

I'll try your method later bigdecisionaboutwork. Thanks.

My neighbours are lovely but we're not that close! Maybe I could train the dog to do it.

I always get my dds to stand on the bed and get them to help me. Nice dress btw.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 14:57

Thanks Longdistance. I no longer have kids at home.

Nice dress!

Amortentia · 13/04/2021 17:11

Getting it up is one thing, but how do you get it off again. You need to think this one through. I nearly had a full blown panic attack in a changing room because I got something on but couldn't get back out again 🤣

Elieza · 13/04/2021 17:22

Pair of pliers as an extension to your arm?

Weird the zip pull has no hole.

FreekStar · 13/04/2021 17:41

I can zip up dresses like this in the same way @bigdecisionaboutwork does. It's not rocket science- it's never occurred to me that other people can't do that!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/04/2021 17:48

I also do it in the same way as @bigdecisionaboutwork
Then the same in reverse to remove.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 13/04/2021 17:52

Bulldog clip on a bit of string?

TheFlis12345 · 13/04/2021 18:06

That ridiculously priced gadget looks like it’s essentially a lanyard extending clip so you should be able to get one of those for a couple of quid!

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 18:24

I did it! Thanks to bigdecisionaboutwork's method. It was the pulling it up at the top that made all the difference! I think I was a bit worried about ripping it when I tried it on earlier so didn't want to pull it around too much. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Isn't it ridiculous. You never see men's clothes that don't allow them to dress themselves. Men wouldn't put up with it.

bigdecisionaboutwork · 13/04/2021 19:02

Brill! The reverse should work to take it off Smile

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/04/2021 19:10

All of my other dresses are jersey fabric so I've never had this problem before. I just need to go somewhere nice to wear it now.

Dental floss does the trick when there's a hole in the zip. Can you adapt that somehow?

RayonSunrise · 13/04/2021 21:04

Zipping up your own dresses is yoga motivation, isn't it? (I'm thinking of that prayer-hands-behind-your-back business...)

Funnily enough I have been thinking about taking up yoga!
