Wedding guest outfit for size 16 44 yr old?

Good friend getting married this Autumn. Would like to look smart/vaguely cool/not frumpy but not spend the day shivering. Can only seem to find dresses that are designed either for a 20 yr old on a big night out or a mother of the bride! Can anyone recommend where to look?

I love that MaxMara dress.

Amdone123 · 12/04/2021 10:12

Yeah, the MaxMara one is really lovely.

Have a look on ASOS for Vero Moda Curve: you can size up as they’re not huge. I got a gorgeous wrap dress that has got a few compliments from there.

Nancy Mac also looks nice. More expensive but nice dresses

Disabrie22 · 12/04/2021 20:33

Have you looked at Monsoon? They still have lots of beautiful dresses that would work well for autumn

WouldBeGood · 12/04/2021 20:38

Nancy Mac also has gorgeous silk velvet coats.. my, I’m taken with them, need an occasion 😃

YY Monsoon and MaxMara!

I really like this from Zara, £59.99, I suppose it depends whether your Autumn wedding is September or November though.

I have a similar problem, one of my nephews is marrying in October.
I'm tempted by this www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/hayden-jersey-dress-navy-scallop-eccentric/sty-j0126-npt?cat=C2_S2_G4 as I like bright and have accessories to match already, but may cop out and go for the green.

I like this from All Saints, only goes up to a 14????? I love All Saints dresses, they are quite timeless, this would still be really flattering in larger sizes, so I don't understand their thinking.

I’m a 40 something size 16, I find shift dresses very unflattering and frumpy looking on me. I tend to go for fit and flare styles/vintage style.
Jersey and floaty fabrics do nothing for me either Other than extenuate my lumps and bumps.

Usually I’d look in Monsoon, phase 8, jolie moi. Or A department store like John Lewis/Debenhams/fenwicks. (Will there be any left?)
I also have a few dresses from Emily and Finn
that I love - they are all cotton, but could easily be dressed up with accessories for a wedding. Only problem is I find they fit small, particularly round my waist, so check measurements. I’m usually a 14/16 but post lockdown weight gain means my E&F size 16 dresses are all too Tight atm.

I love the last , and other stories one.
It is modern classy and could definitely be worn again.

MayIDestroyYou · 13/04/2021 09:05

I'd completely forgotten the existence of All Saints! The dress Rina66 posted prompted me to have a look round the rest of the site - where I found at least three dresses I might recommend or make a gift of. The yellow broderie anglaise was cute, though it could have been both less embellished and bolder with the details.

But all the nicer looking loungewear is logo covered, there's too much sweaty synthetic fibre, and the whole enterprise looks faintly dated, verging on naff.

Hmm ...

Also love this dress from Dancing Leopard for a wedding and it's got pockets!!!

Monsoon, MaxMara, Coast, Mint Velvet Phase Eight.Damsel in a Dress, Fenn Wright Manson..I'm a bit shorter and chunkier than you but can usually find something. I'm told I carry my weight well though Blush

MissTediousGirl · 13/04/2021 23:44

Thanks all - some shops there I'd not been aware of before, so really helpful. Had a look on the Nancy Mac site and there's a really beautiful green velvet dress there - bit more than I was looking to spend, so will weigh up potential for it to be a real investment piece with the significant possibility of me spilling my dinner down the front first time I wear it...

I'm nearly 43 and a size 14/16 heavy on top too. I like Hush. Beautiful dresses and well proportioned. Perhaps not overly wedding style as you normally see but very wearable. I've just bought a maxi dress from them for summer, think it was £69.
