Alpha H liquid gold is amazing stuff - what else is like this?

Honestly, I look about 5 years younger and as though I've had 15 hours of the best sleep ever when I put this on my face.

I don't know if it's a bit harmful doing it every night.

But if this works for you, what else works on your skin?

Liquid Gold is an AHA so good for ageing/dry/giving dull skin a glow.

Others on this thread are BHAs so more suitable for oily, breakout prone.

AHAs and BHAs do different things, AHAs resurface while BHAs penetrate the skin and help to get the gunk out that causes breakouts.

Glycolic acid is an AHA
Salicylic is a BHA

Liquid Gold was one of the first, and us still very good. The market is now full of both AHAs and BHAs. Look for the % and there'll definitely be a cheaper one than both LG and PC.

Geamhradh · 11/04/2021 13:38

@Divebar2021

It’s been purchased 22 times from Cult Beauty today.... I wonder if those are all Mumsnetters?

I have 2 questions .... is it ok for dry skin and can you use it if you’re using retinol?

Liquid Gold or any glycolics are great for dry skin.
Geamhradh · 11/04/2021 13:40

@Ingridla

I bought some as saw people raving about it on here but I don't really understand what it does, or how I'm supposed to apply it
Acids are used instead of toners, or the horrific gritty scrubs we all used to torture ourselves with. That's what they do- they're just liquid exfoliants. Build up slowly, every two or three nights at first.
Geamhradh · 11/04/2021 13:42

@CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove

I use a Salicylic Acid face soap most days...would it be too much to use that and the Alpha H Liquid Gold?
They are two different acids doing two different things. If you're oily and blemish prone, salicylic or a BHA, if you're dry with fine lines etc an AHA/liquid gold.
Geamhradh · 11/04/2021 13:47

Both Pixi glow and Liquid Gold (original) sit at 5% glycolic. You can get higher percentages. Some years ago a load of us participated in a thread called "schizzlers" or something where we went up to about 30% (effectively an acid peel rather than a resurfacing toner) Not sure there's much point tbh. You can only do that kind of strength every so often.
Nip& Fab have the same % as Paula's Choice products and Pixi (both glycolics and salicylics) and are almost always on BOGOF. Superdrug do their own range as well.

My routine I have perfected aged 40:

Cleanse 1 with an oil that emulsifies with water - currently using a Sanctuary one which is fine, I've tried different ones at different price points and all do similar -removes all makeup gently.

Cleanse 2 with Nip and Fab glycolic scrub fix - leaves my skin glassy smooth.

Serum - The Ordinary 'Buffet' which has peptides and hyaluronic acid and seems to make my skin more pillowy.

Moisture / sunblock - La Roche Posay SPF50

I use this daily and it works for me.

CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove · 11/04/2021 13:51

@Geamhradh What if I'm oily, blemish-prone with the start of fine lines (hello awkward skin stage of my mid-30s)

Oooh. I think I'd watch Nadine Baggott videos. That's where I learned everything I know about skin from!
Caroline Hirons is also good, but Nadine takes things down to basic needs (less is more, and fine if you want to use 18 different products on your face, but realistically there are only 5 she recommends to everyone) (cleanser/vit C, sunscreen, retinol, moisture)

TheDaydreamBelievers · 11/04/2021 14:15

The only thing in my routine I love is Cerave foaming cleanser (spot prone skin here).

I'm planning on moving on to the Paula's Choice BHA and The Ordinary Buffet serum after my current exfoliants/serums run out

Bloodyfuckit · 11/04/2021 14:20

@KittytheHare

Where are people sourcing tretinoin?
Dermatica.
HelenHywater · 11/04/2021 14:25

I tend to use salicylic/ BHAs in the morning and AHAs/ Glycolic in the evening. (possibly read that on Caroline Hirons years ago. )

Anyway I don't mind Pixi Glow but find that Liquid Gold has a more dramatic effect. I use alot of Nip & Fab and the superdrug range.

I don't have dry skin at all. (I'm 50). Not many lines, possibly due to having quite oily skin.

I think I'm going to read Nadine Baggott

Is QVC's current offer a good one? 2 x 100ml for £43.

LeonardoAcropolis · 11/04/2021 16:02

Hello, I've been using Pixi Overnight glow serum, it has 10% glycolic acid and Pixi recommend you use it nightly. I like it but not as much as OP and others seem to love the Alpha HSmile

This is it pixibeauty.co.uk/products/overnight-glow-serum?variant=34997444554 is it the same sort of thing?

Timeformyparty · 11/04/2021 16:44

Thanks OP for the thread, I have just bought some of this.

Can anyone help with what I can use on my body please? I had awful skin as a teen (had roaccutane) and now is not bad but o get the odd spots on my back and also get KP on my legs although that is now under control but I do get small red spots on my legs. I have one of those Korean cloths too but what product can help these pleeeeease kindly ph wise knowledgable ones?

HermioneWeasley · 11/04/2021 17:25

The Ordinary does a good glycolic acid

Namaste6 · 11/04/2021 22:39

@Amelia666 hi! The one is use is from Current Body - their own brans mask. It's on a silicone base, so wraps neatly around the face. The key is to find a mask that sits as close to the skin as possible - which this one does. Hope this helps. 🙏

Pupster21 · 11/04/2021 22:44

Medik8 C tetra is great for my skin. The best moisturiser I’ve found is the Clinique gel like one, absorbs really well and so allows my LRP Shaka spf to absorb well. I used to love liquid gold until it suddenly started burning my face off and I’d be bright red the next day, pixi glow gave me the worst acne I’ve ever had. Paulas choice bha was really good, I need to repurchase. Currently using pestle & mortar nmf acid toner which I really like.

Thank you 😊

Hoolihan · 12/04/2021 14:13

@KittytheHare I get the tretinoin from Skin+Me. It's really really good.

Bananarama3star · 12/04/2021 15:11

For those wanting to try the Alpha H Liquid Gold....I have just ordered the anniversary set off QVC for £32 ( plus P&P) it includes the normal 100ml size, plus a 50ml and a 30ml bottle and a small mask, currently £33.50 in M&S just for the 100ml size alone.

KittytheHare · 12/04/2021 22:51

@Hoolihan, thank you so much!

anyoldtime · 12/04/2021 23:25

I have ordered it too and am expecting miracles after all the positive feedback on this thread. :)

CaptainNelson · 13/04/2021 17:36

Just to say, be a bit careful with Alpha H Liquid Gold if you have even slightly sensitive skin. I never thought I had (can use Pixi Glow fine) but this stuff turned me totally red and flaky. Luckily it was only a sample. I'm in early 50s and my skin is definitely not as tolerant as it used to be

Nohomemadecandles · 13/04/2021 17:40

Aldi Glycolic! I'm on my second bottle and I've two in reserve. It's as good as Pixie on my skin. And £3.99

MotherOfGodHoulYerWhisht · 13/04/2021 20:49

Thanks everyone, definitely getting the LG!

Can anyone recommend something for my wrinkly, sundamaged décolletage? Would the Liquid Gold also help with that do you think? I’m 43
