Anyone suggest some outfits for me?

Been living in trackies more or less the last year, now planning non lockdown wardrobe. I've become really sensitive to clothes, especially on my legs. I can't abide jeans or leggings. Basically anything with stiff material or tight around the waist or tight around my legs. I have a couple of pairs of wide leg trousers but im not sure I can pull them off as I'm only 5 foot. I cant quite get them balanced without them drowning me. Normal trousers feel a bit too formal. I have some linen joggers for summer too but that's it! I feel so limited. I'm not naturally stylish so I'm really struggling. I'd like to look casual but groomed. I'm a 12 and 45 if that matters. Please please oh stylish mumsnetters help a middle aged frump out!

How about a jersey dress? Needs to be thigh quality jersey to be flattering with some gathering at the tum perhaps depending on your shape?

GertrudeTheGreat · 09/04/2021 17:20

The weather is getting warmer, so maybe some dresses? So easy in the summer, as you can just fling them on and they are easy to make look stylish, as you don't have to match bottoms and tops Smile. Maybe something like a shirt dress? Nice and casual, but groomed.

Paperbag tapered trousers can be dressed up or down. Wide legged jumpsuits in a couple of different colours/patterns. Midi skirts and maxi or midi dresses.

Feckinlego · 09/04/2021 18:00

Thanks, some brilliant suggestions. Dont know how I didnt think of dresses or jumpsuits! Midi skirts I'm scared of, wouldn't have a clue what to wear on top.

Other than a denim jacket what over cover up would people suggest?

For me it depends on the outfit. I wear a blazer with jumpsuits, tweed style when it's cool, and a lighter fabric for when it's warmer. I love wearing a chunky knit cardigan with maxi dresses. Depends on your style 🙂

TooMinty · 09/04/2021 19:22

Dungarees? They come in other fabrics than denim. Or harem pants? I am 5ft but I think I can carry them off... I have a lovely long pleated skirt from Me & Em where the waistband folds over so I can shorten it to my length.

KirstenBlest · 09/04/2021 19:26

Loose dungarees are good. Run & Fly and Lucy &Yak are popular.
They are good because they give a long look and you just wear a t-shirt underneath.

Re coverups, I've seen jersey, biker jackets mentioned on here a bit recently.

I have a soft, faux suede, navy, biker jacket, which has been in my wardrobe for ages! Think I may be accidentally fashionable, as it looks a lot like the jersey biker jackets I have seen!

Anyway, I find mine very versatile. It is the only jacket I own! (I also have two coats).

TooMinty · 09/04/2021 19:42

I have a denim jacket, a blazer, a leather jacket, numerous chunky knit long cardigans and a couple of sloppy zip up hoodies. But I live in Scotland and feel the cold so always need an extra layer!

TooMinty · 09/04/2021 19:42

If I'm cold in dungarees I add a tighter fitting jumper under them.

GertrudeTheGreat · 09/04/2021 19:43

Oh yes, I have lived in Scotland and NI! I remember it well. You need All The Coats!

I do have wool sweaters as well and merino thermals! I hate being cold.

TooMinty · 09/04/2021 19:47

Me too! Today I was wearing a hoodie dress and down jacket under my denim jacket 😂

GertrudeTheGreat · 09/04/2021 20:26

You do get to live in Scotland though, which is ne of my favourite, (probably my very favourite), country to live in! I just loved it there

Shorter cardigans with quite large buttons are very fashionable now. Look at Arket, &OtherStories, Cos, even M&S do them. They really suit shorter people. Failing that, a biker jacket. M&S have a couple of great ones.

Massimo Dutti do the most stylish clothes. I would consider midi dresses - but you are quite short. I would think a skirt would go with a t shirt and cardigan. One of the best fashion ideas web site is actually The Daily Telegraph. Great ideas and not always high priced items.

Try peg or tapered trousers. Chinos can be well cut and comfortable. Wear with flat loafers. Try a long swishy cardigan too. Poetry have great casual linen clothes if you like linen and cottons.

I think M&S might have sold out but other makes are available. I know the others are not budget conscious but they give you an idea. I like them too! There’s other suggestions where you put a pleated skirt with a white shirt and add a belt. Add a denim jacket and you will look great. Blazers are back too!

TooMinty · 10/04/2021 14:00

Oh, I forgot to mention I have a nice denim shirt dress from Superdry which is quite soft and not too long on me. I usually wear leggings underneath but when the weather is warmer you could do without. I sometimes wear a wide belt with it if I want a more defined waist.

PresentingPercy · 10/04/2021 19:01

Boden have a few pleated skirts in their sale. You might find the right size.
