What kind of trainers do you use that look "elegant"?

I never quite manage to get that effortless and stylish look that some women manage with trainers and pants. I always look like an overweight person going to the gym. I know that being overweight doesn't help 😓 I am a 16 UK. Many thanks for any advice

I don't like that look either, Berol
I think it's a bit adolescent, much like the denim shorts and black tights look from a few years ago.

Tightwad2020 · 08/04/2021 21:45

I like the Onitsuka Tigers Mexico66 range - lots of different colours.

Rose Rankin are good too - I wait for half-price sales to come along. They come up quite wide, which may be good for some. second-store.com/collections/brand-rose-rankin. I"ve got a white pair for summer wear with bare ankles and they work with trousers or dresses.

Adidas Gazelle are good. Havent' tried Stan Smith yet, but they will be next.

Deathraystare · 09/04/2021 08:42

Surely no trainers are elegant. That is not their purpose!

someonelockthefridgealready · 09/04/2021 09:01

I have the Puma suede ones with a bow. They're not for everyone, but I love them and you never look like you're going to the gym in them. But they are super comfortable.

Although I never look elegant, so I'm not entirely sure I'm the right person to comment!

LunaTheCat · 09/04/2021 09:03

I have just bought white vejas with red and blue V8s - I am in love. They are comfy and I feel very swish.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 09/04/2021 09:05

I have these geox:

@halfthesun gosh, the op said 'elegant!' Those can't be described as elegant by any stretch of the imagination

I wear Gucci or plain white Adidas. They're still trainers of course but not clompy

LadyAgripina · 09/04/2021 09:58

I am sure that there is a better word than elegant, English is not my first language BlushWhat I meant is what somebody said here "that high and low vibe"? All the suggestions were what I was looking for, and I added the comfortable aspect, since there are so many of them. I am going back to work and I can go with that informal look (except when we have in person meetings). I think the pure white flat ones with a suit or formal trousers will do. Thank you all

Flat and white and definitely the way to go.

I really like New Balance 574 for a bit of colour with jeans as well

Fairyliz · 09/04/2021 10:12

Those John Lewis ‘vegan’ trainers aka plastic are £230!
Someone is having a laugh.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 09/04/2021 10:29

My Stan smiths are my favourite as the most comfortable. I got the ones with navy backs as I don’t like the classic green.
I also have a pair of Gucci with the green and red stripe with a bee embroidered on but rarely wear them. Although they are similar in style and fit to the Stan smith I feel more clumpy in them.

I’m about to hit buy on the rose gold veja. I keep seeing so many people saying how fab they are and saw the ones with the rose gold v and really like them. I’m only buying as it looks like nay holiday this year will be U.K. based and so I don’t really need anymore sandals. Trainers look good with midi/maxi dresses and skirts. Can look cute with a shirred smock type dress as well. Or jersey t shirt dresses.

LadyAgripina · 09/04/2021 18:43

I'll get the Stan smiths tomorrow and they are all white, including the green classic tag is white. I'll report back when I had used them. Thank you all

Superga, I have had lots of colours over the years and I stick them in the washing machine - always a win!

LovinLondon613 · 14/04/2021 17:45

Those Portuguese trainers look really nice! I know they're expensive, but I'm trying NOT to buy things made in China these days.

FreekStar · 14/04/2021 17:53

Nike Court Royale in white. These are so neat! They make my feet look cute and small. And the tongue doesn't come too far up the ankle- Stan Smiths have a really long tongue which is untidy and I think makes my legs look shorter.

Minikty · 14/04/2021 17:54

Sketchers trainer's are very good and come in a range of colours. Because although you want elegant trainer's you still want them to serve a purpose and not give you blister's.

FizzyTarte · 14/04/2021 17:58

Reiker do some nice, more dressy trainers.

Illegible · 14/04/2021 18:10

I'm thinking of getting these from Toast. They look like a decent halfway between unsupported superga types and garish logo'd trainers.

@LifeInAHamsterWheel

Any tips on keeping them clean?? I splurged on a pair of leather supergas and as well as finding them very uncomfortable, I find them impossible to keep clean. Particularly the laces, which have blackened around where the lace holes are. I don't mind wiping over the shoes so much, but I hate having to take the laces out and then do them up again, it's such a faff!!
I had some that were fit for the bin. So when I went walking along the beach and had the urge to paddle, I didn't worry about messing them up. Walked about a mile, calf deep in the sea. When I came out they were a bit battered looking (they were around 5yrs old) but pristine clean and I got another 2yrs out of them.
Eaumyword · 14/04/2021 18:57

@LadyAgripina did you get the Adidas Stan Smiths?
Just pondering a purchase myself, but non rubbing arthritic toe comfort is the absolute priority here! If they look nice, it's a bonus!

LadyAgripina · 14/04/2021 19:06

@Eaumyword yes!! They are perfect: nice, comfortable, chill and with that "vibe". I used them with palazzos this week (because #lockdownFat) and EVEN MY DH noticed. He said: wow, I love your "shoes". they are super rock! Hmm

Geox have great stylish Italian trainers

ChubbyMsSunshine · 14/04/2021 19:13

I'd say a shell-toe like Adidas Stan smiths or something with a 'flat' toe. They look so much less like gymwear than the type of trainers that turn up at the toe.

I love a Nike air Max but NEVER wear them as streetwear as I feel like a frump no matter how cool the trainers are.

valleyplaza · 14/04/2021 19:15

Marks and Spencer usually have a good selection of trainers...none of which seem to be for actual exercise, and they are not that expensive
