New perfume

Preparing to get back on the dating scene again in late 50's so having an overhaul of beauty products. I haven't worn perfume for years and would like to start again so have been having a look on YouTube to see what is out there.
I know perfume is a very personal thing but quite a few people have recommended Lancôme La Nuit Tresor. Unfortunately there is no way of sampling it before I fork out nearly £60!

Is anybody familiar with it and is it more a perfume for a night out rather than everyday wear?

This has been my winter perfume for 6 years, I am very familiar with it and have gone through many bottles. It’s very well blended, very high quality and smells way more expensive than it is. It’s also very long lasting and quite powerful (some would call it intoxicating, others might say it’s overpowering). It’s a warm and inviting perfume, which is why many people say it’s sexy or date night or party appropriate. That being said, I am a very introverted person working a pretty sober, serious job and I used to wear it to work day to day pre-pandemic (in the cold season) so I think it really depends on your attitude. I think on me it just smells friendly and pleasant and helps me come across a bit more approachable, but I can see why it could be too much on a very bubbly, very flirty person. Look it up on fragrantica (the ultimate database for everything perfume related) and read some of the reviews to get an idea.

If I may offer some more general advice on how to find the right perfume for you for this occasion, try to identify how you want to be perceived and what vibe you want to project. It would be great to start with some basic likes and dislikes (are you into florals or do you like green perfumes? maybe heavy orientals? or fruity ones? etc) but beyond that, perfume is all about mood setting and you need to figure out what mood you want to set in general and then find the perfume that will help you achieve that. Tell us a bit more about how you want to be perceived when wearing this perfume. It would also help to know what other perfumes you liked/owned in the past to get a feel for what works on you and even those you hated if you can think of any :)

My favourites are Alien, YSL black opium, Carolina Herrera - Good girl

@AliceSansWonderland ..thank you for such a detailed answer. I would like the perfume to be worn in the evening where a future date ( I should be so lucky) will not be overpowered but will think it's a sexy smell.
In the past I have worn Dune ( many moons ago) Chanel number 5 and Bamboo ( can't for the life of me think who that is by at the moment).
I do not like really heavy perfumes ( most Estée Lauder ones give me a bad head) and prefer musky to floral.

Bamboo is Gucci, isn’t it? All 3 you mentioned are strong, full of personality perfumes, so we know you are not into light inoffensive ones. They are also classy and refined, so you’re not into sugary, youthful ones either (not implying anything about age btw, simply saying you’re probably more into womanly perfumes than girly ones). I think you’d like La Nuit Tresor and you could carry it without it feeling “too much”. To @Choccyaddict4eva‘s point, YSL Black Opium would also be a good option and maybe a safer blind buy.

I wonder if you could buy your perfume from the brand’s website instead of John Lewis or whatever. If you write to them, they are always happy to send a small sample with the full bottle so you can test the perfume and be able to return the unopened bottle if you don’t like it. Sometimes they do this on their own, but it’s best to ask.

@AliceSansWonderland thank you so much. Will do that as £78 is a lot to pay if I don't like it.

Just going to leave some suggestions! I love the La Nuit, I have it and I also love these..
Dior Addict (Blue bottle)
Miss Dior EDP or Absolutely Blooming (not any of the others)
Si in the Red Bottle
Black opium
Lancome La Vie a Belle
Dior Poison Girl EDP
Libre by YSL
Valentino perfumes smell amazing, I can't choose but I want one!

There should be offers over the weekend too? I did see people trying perfumes when I went for my eye test in Boots earlier!

It’s only 10 days until non-essential shops open . Personally I would wait until I could try some out .

@Grandadwasthatyou could you have a look for samples on eBay? I've done that with lots of perfume during lockdown.
