Weight loss and clothes

I'm aware that this is a very good problem to have as far as problems go, but after a 3 stone weight loss I've found my jeans, skirts etc just don't fit me anymore. Tops are ok as I can wear those big, and dresses are just about ok even though they look a bit like tentish.

I've been living in leggings throughout lockdown so when I have to emerge into the civilised world, I won't have much that fits. I have a big wardrobe of too-big clothes now, but I'm reluctant to get rid incase I gain weight again. I made the mistake of throwing away all my clothes id grown out of even though they would easily fit me now!

I also don't want to waste money on smaller clothes if I gain the weight again. What would you recommend?

Are you happy to have lost three stone?
If so, throw away any unflatteringly too big clothes, buy new ones in smaller size, and don't put the weight back on.

I’ve lost 2 1/2 stone and living in leggings too, until the shops all open again. I’ve got rid of my previous clothes: they are a waste of space and I plan on keeping the weight off

You could alter skirts quite easily. Jeans not so much.

DropDTuning · 30/03/2021 17:13

Absolutely get rid of the big clothes. You won't regain that weight.

MaudesMum · 30/03/2021 19:12

I hid a big box of clothes away for a year or two (just in case), and then sold some of the nicer ones.

I've got some half belts which have been brilliant. They effectively elasticate the waist at the back of the jeans, much more effective than a belt that makes everything clumpy.

Also, you can sew darts into the back so they fit at the waist. I have to do this anyway, as jeans are always too big at the waist.

I've lost 3 stone and am hoping to get through the summer without buying more. I'll buy next autumn.

I’m on a weight loss journey .... 20lbs so far and am one size smaller currently My thoughts are if you keep the big clothes you’re giving yourself permission to gain the weight again. Identify anything that can be altered and take it to a seamstress or tailor to be altered ( if possible) otherwise ship it out. Enjoy your new slim figure and buy yourself some lovely summer clothes. Well done on your achievement

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 30/03/2021 19:33

Well if you wanted to lose weight, firstly congratulations on that. Otherwise l hope you are ok.

I have intentionally lost a bit over 2 stone. I've bought trousers and skirts on ebay or in the sales.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 30/03/2021 19:35

My thoughts: you've done so well, it is a pity not to celebrate and enjoy that by buying a couple of lovely new things. Summer things, I guess, since baggy too-big jumpers and leggings will still work in winter.

I would try and salvage via a seamstress anything you absolutely love, or was expensive, but not ordinary stuff. Keep the rest in the attic and don't buy any elasticated waists ... ;)

Sell on eBay and treat yourself
When I lost weight the only things I had altered were some of my jaeger cashmere coats which I couldn’t afford to replace

chipsandpeas · 30/03/2021 20:42

get rid of the big clothes
i made the mistake of keeping mine and didnt notice the weight creeping back on

BrennieGirl · 30/03/2021 20:47

I’ve lost a lot of weight over the last couple of years. I’m 3/4 sizes smaller now. I decided not to keep any of my bigger clothes (bar a couple of favourite pieces I can’t bear to part with although I obviously don’t wear them anymore). Like a poster above said, it’s almost giving yourself permission to put the weight back on.

I had a few bits and pieces altered. Not everything is suitable for alteration but I had a good few dresses and skirts taken in. Anything good quality I gave to a friend of mine. The rest I gave to charity.

thinkofablinkingnamewoman · 30/03/2021 20:52

I've lost 10 kg and have 10 to go. Have decided I'm going to allow myself to buy some things which fit me as I am now, but only from eBay or charity shops when they reopen. Then I will have a bit of a splurge when I reach my target. And I've sold some bits too.....
