Jumpsuits for a 49 year old: yes or no?

Frequentflier · 25/03/2021 11:12

Just what it says. I am a size 12 in most things, size 10 in some things and 5"7. I have never attempted jumpsuits. If you are a similar size, are there any flattering and cheap ones out there?

Yes!

Frequentflier · 25/03/2021 11:15

I forgot to say I am an apple with a v pronounced tummy.

Based on your OP I was going to say yes. But based on your subsequent post, I'm going to say no! It's got nothing to do with age and everything to do with shape as far as I'm concerned. I rocked jumpsuits, looked fab in them (and I'm 47) but with an extra stone on me and most of that sitting on my belly and thighs I now look bloody awful in them.

You'd really need to try on, some are cut differently and you might find a flattering one. But it's really not an age thing so if you do manage to find one that fits nice then go for it Smile

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/03/2021 11:25

Try some on and see what you think. Sophie Hagen wears them often.

marriednotdead · 25/03/2021 11:30

Definitely no age limit for jumpsuits! I'm a similar size to you and mid 50s and have several. Mine are all wide leg to balance my shape as my lower half is very slim.
Have to say none were cheap though and getting the waistline right to avoid looking pregnant is essential.

daisyjgrey · 25/03/2021 11:41

Yes. Wear what you like, regardless of how old you are or what shape you are.

Fuck anyone else's opinion if they don't like it if you love it!

dudsville · 25/03/2021 11:43

It's not about age but body. I love jumpsuits, dungarees, etc., but my body is too long for them. I look ok standing but sitting is uncomfortable!

Yes, I think I should wait till shops open and try on. So many seem to emphasise the tummy area.

Definitely about body shape. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that twice in recent years I’ve been mistaken for being pregnant and they were both while wearing jumpsuits Grin

I took it as a compliment that I look young enough to be pregnant at 48!

Frequentflier · 25/03/2021 12:12

@MarkRuffaloCrumble I have been mistaken for being pregnant on the Tube when not wearing jumpsuits :( 20 yr old DD fell about laughing.

Agree with PPs that it's about shape not age. I'm 34 but same body type as you OP - tall and healthy weight but with a round apple tummy. I really want to be able to wear jumpsuits but the ones I've tried are just so unflattering on me.
Dungarees seem to be in this summer but I'm not sure I could pull off that look!

CMOTDibbler · 25/03/2021 15:14

I thought I could never wear a jumpsuit, but have a couple of the Alice Temperley and they look great - the shirred waist and wide leg balances me out nicely (49, size 12, tummy, big bum)

RancidOldHag · 25/03/2021 15:16

I really don't like the look.

But if you do then dress according to your mirror, not your calendar.

And remember to wear it only for occasions when you have good access to loos with good size cubicles. Never for air journeys! They're not fun in a hurry, and so not a great choice unless your pelvic floor is in good shape

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 25/03/2021 15:31

I'm 47 and I wear them but I'm hourglass . I do think they are more flattering on a flat tummy but that's nothing to do with age .. also if you like it and are happy then wear them !

lindyloo57 · 25/03/2021 15:53

Hi, I am 60 and love a jumpsuit, only really got into them last year, being only 5ft 3 is a little harder to find a good fit, the first one I got was second hand from ebay, a strapless one, then I got a couple more, and one from the john lewis sale, wider legs suit me better being a inverted triangle shape, I find i struggle if it has a zip at the back, had to return the hush silver grey one as I couldn't do the zip up myself,
Was gutted as I loved it.

Frequentflier · 25/03/2021 16:04

Sorry if I have been ageist on this thread. I agree it is more to do with shape. The thought popped into my head after I saw a 51 yr old friend on Facebook wearing a jumpsuit and looking great. I think both her tummy and pelvic floor are in better shape than mine though:)

OP posts:
AuntieDolly · 25/03/2021 16:14

Aren't they a pain if you need the loo?

onemouseplace · 25/03/2021 16:20

Definitely more to do with shape. I've also put on a lot of weight around my stomach (and now resemble a weeble) and it is not a good look with the couple of jumpsuits I do own.

BUT there may be some out that that are more flattering for your shape. When I bought my first jumpsuit I basically ordered every single black jumpsuit JL had in stock and tried them all on - and one looked great! Every single other one didn't quite work. I think with jumpsuits you really have to put the legwork in and try on loads.

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 17:58

Check how you look from behind. If you are someone who always wants the loo they can be a PITA. Check if it's comfortable when you sit down.
There are so many styles to choose from.

I wear jumpsuits and dungarees and I'm older than you. I love pinafores but they need to be longish as they ride up when i sit down,

marriednotdead · 25/03/2021 19:02

@AuntieDolly

Aren't they a pain if you need the loo?
Yes, especially when you've got a cardi over the top and a pin in the wrap over top to contain cleavage Grin
KistenBlest · 25/03/2021 19:58

Oh god yes. I made the mistake of wearing dungarees, hoodie and coat.
The jumper goes under not over it now.

Knittingnanny · 25/03/2021 20:24

Well I’ve got one, 5’2” and aged 64. Wear whatever makes you feel good. My lovely adult stepdaughters would be honest and tell me if it made me look ridiculous.

MajorNeville · 25/03/2021 20:29

53 year old says yes!

Knittingnanny · 25/03/2021 20:37

Re the toilet! Mine is quite wide legged and I’ve perfected joining up one leg and pulling my clothes to one side and weeing!!! Years of over active bladder and weeing behind bushes.
