John Lewis - Fake discounting?

There's an item of clothing I've bought previously on JL website - when I bought it last year it was 20% off.
I keep re-checking the item, as I wanted to buy another, but not in a hurry, so thought I would wait for another 20% off.
This morning I've noticed that it's been 'discounted by 20%' but the price hasn't dropped.
I added the item to my basket to see if that would trigger the price discount - but no.
Isn't this illegal?
I last looked last week at the price, so I doubt I have missed a price increase/then discount.
I'm not on Twitter and JL customer service is so crap these days I can't be bothered to ring and ask them - but I think this is so shady!

John Lewis - Fake discounting?

John Lewis prices tend to be quoted inclusive of discount. I've never had any issues at all with John Lewis - one of the best retailers out there.

Their discounts seem very random. I bought a French Connection blouse from there for £40 during the January sales. When I went to send the link to my DM, as she liked it, it had been marked back up to £60. Perhaps it was reduced for a short time and then they marked it back up again?

I thought that too, but I believe my own eyes and I'm just reporting what I've seen as I wondered if anyone else had noticed this pricing strategy with them.

I think JL tend to show the price with the discount already applied. But if you bought it at 20% off, and it now has 20% off again, surely the price would be the same?

supermodel · 25/03/2021 15:17

That price includes the 20% discount applied, are you saying it was exactly the same price before without discount?

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 25/03/2021 15:27

They price match daily , I worked for them a few years ago and they change their prices every 24 hours to match competitors. It's probably a mistake but they will match any other price if you find it cheaper .

faustina · 25/03/2021 17:47

Do you know the exact same thing happened to me today! I bought a jacket yesterday for £89 - haven't even picked it up yet, and this morning it said 20% off! But was the exact same price. I applied for the price match thing and it was declined, so I did the online chat and they said there must be a mistake and it wasn't really 20% off - and then I called them and spoke to a rational person who refunded me the 20% discount. I doubt it was sharp practice - more likely just they forgot to lower the price on that item. It was a big pain in the arse though

unforgotten23 · 26/03/2021 00:19

Yes just to clarify the best is always £30.
I bought it when it was 20% off in Nov last year - therefore it was £24.
Now is is showing that it is 20% off - but the price hasn't reduced, it's still £30.
Maybe I will give them a ring @faustina - thanks

Their customer service is quite good. I contacted them about something fairly recently and they sorted it immediately over the phone so you could just call them or email them.

Nitgel · 26/03/2021 08:07

I didn't think they price matched anymore ? Ivehadmy eye on a fc top that had been 24 in the fc sale but 60 on jl site for months.

Not any more. It was in the news last year that they'd quietly dropping this policy
BlueCowWonders · 26/03/2021 08:13

Dropped
Sorry

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 26/03/2021 15:07

Oh really ..must have changed since I worked there ..interesting!

W3dontdoduvets · 26/03/2021 15:16

There’s a price match on now though Confused

faustina · 26/03/2021 15:24

I have done loads of price matches in the past year - there's a little form you can fill in and they've always refunded me within the day - it couldn't be easier:

price match claim

supermodel · 26/03/2021 18:50

Looks like it’s been corrected now unforgotten23

supermodel · 26/03/2021 18:51

Sorry @unforgotten23 see message above

AAR25 · 26/03/2021 20:56

I work for JL, had a customer with a similar issue on a car seat a few months ago. It seems there's a lag between it saying 20% off and the discounted amount showing. It's showing the correct price now

unforgotten23 · 26/03/2021 22:20

Thanks everyone, I thought that it was very suspicious (just because having brought up in a very pro-JL household but thinking they have been trading on that legacy reputation for several years now and the legendary customer service isn't what it used to be).
I'm still surprised it took over 24 hrs for the price to actually get dropped?

OP posts:
FreekStar · 27/03/2021 10:05

It's most probably an error. I've had some underwear in my basket for a while waiting for a discount- I noticed it had dropped in price yesterday so not fake discount.

FreekStar · 27/03/2021 10:07

I think the price change was triggered at midnight- it was just after midnight when I was shopping last night and they had been full price earlier that evening.
