Hi, I am considering a short-sleeved navy Velvet midi dress for a summer wedding....need some kind of jacket, bolero, wrap.....accessories. Any ideas....thoughts?

Velvet’s a bit warm and heavy for summer. I think you’d have to put a jacket with it, as a wrap could look too lightweight with it.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 23/03/2021 21:27

I think you’d be too hot and it would look a bit odd and out of place.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/03/2021 21:33

No velvet after January, surely! 😁

Inneedofanewwardrobe · 23/03/2021 21:40

I don't think it would look right.

thedevilinablackdress · 23/03/2021 21:43

Summer where? Orkney - fine. Surrey - possibly too hot.

PresentingPercy · 23/03/2021 22:15

Not a great fabric for summer. Great midi dresses are everywhere. Ganni do great ones and their headbands are perfect for weddings. Needle and Thread do perfect wedding guest dresses if you need day to evening. And Reformation or Self Portrait. Can’t go wrong.

I thought it would be contentious....in my defence.... it is a light Velvet....I would rather be a bit warm than a bit cold. I quite like the fact that it would not look right, look odd, look out of place. I've been like that my whole life and I gave up with the notion of 'fitting in' a long time ago. Now I am just me.....open to ideas though PresentingPercy...I'll be checking your recommendations out.

I fully support wearing what you like and feel good in to a wedding and not dressing up as "generic wedding guest". I so regret all the times I did that!

waltzingparrot · 24/03/2021 13:39

I Second not conforming to what everyone's idea of acceptable summer wedding fabrics/colours are. Wear what makes you, you.

Bearnecessity · 24/03/2021 14:47

Thank you......

What style of dress is it? For some reason I am assuming retro-y, but no idea why?

starbrightstarlight8888 · 24/03/2021 14:57

Ooooh I want to see the dress now op! It sounds lovely.

Bearnecessity · 24/03/2021 15:16

Here it is..bit creased..needs a steam!

It's not so much a question of expectations and propriety and "not fitting in"

It's about being so hot you spend the entire day sweating

If you're too cold you can pop your jacket on, but if your base layer is too hot there's nothing you can do.

IllNeverLetGoJack · 24/03/2021 15:28

I think it looks wrong for a summer wedding, which seems to be what you're after (good for you), so, perfect Grin

Bearnecessity · 24/03/2021 15:29

Just realised the skirt bit looks straight in that photo it is more A line when worn and it is a wrap style up top.. can't decide whether to throw colour pop accessories at it or go more funky with blue, white leopard accessories or pare down with muted nude, pink, beiges or floral, nautical or mish mash or go for something-else entirely I am going with my adult ds in either a grey or navy suit.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 24/03/2021 15:33

I’d pare down and keep it elegant for a wedding

VenusClapTrap · 24/03/2021 15:33

I think either brights or leopard could be fun. Something strong, anyway.

Bearnecessity · 24/03/2021 15:35

I hear you merryhouse...I don't want that either....I will be bare legged...not much on underneath....I have been to many summer weddings when I have been cold all day....

I think you run the risk of cooking in velvet depending on when in the summer it is- have been to some heatwave weddings but equally some cold ones. You might want a backup in case it's just too hot.

Wrap might look strange over the top unless the fabric is quite heavy in of itself - probably going to have to be a jacket in a suitably robust fabric that the sleeves won't interfere with how it fits.

Depending on colouring i'd probably style it with leopard or a coral red. Like, a leopard belt and coral shoes would tip it towards quirky, or you could tone it right down with pinkish neutrals. I wouldn't do same colour jacket and shoes or belt and shoes, dislike the 'sandwich' effect that creates.

Bearnecessity · 24/03/2021 16:28

I agree with you Ferret, I will have a Plan B in the event of crazy heat....you are on my wavelength of styling ideas....

I like your approach OP. The last summer wedding I attended I wore a two piece skirt suit with flats a la 1950's and I was comfortable and happy. It was a warm day but I loved my outfit!

Loopyloututu2 · 24/03/2021 16:38

I think it's a lovely dress but very "winter wedding". My wedding was in June and it was absolutely sweltering!

Bearnecessity · 24/03/2021 16:42

dudsville that sounds fab....

I hear you Loopy...it has got short sleeves...it is so comfortable to wear..

OP posts:
absolutehush · 24/03/2021 17:07

I would probably go for a duster jacket thingy (100 stars have nice ones) which would sit nicely on top of the lengths match.

Having a back up plan is a plan - am sure you will look fab whatever you wear!
