80’s girls check your attics!

Was sorting through some clutter and found two Vivienne Westwood corsets from the late 80s and an Azzedine Alai dress. I googled and I think they are worth a few hundred each! I have a teenage daughter so may keep them anyway but had no idea they were worth that much. Anyone else find some 80’s gold?

Update there’s a secondhand fashion website selling an identical corset for £3K, not that anyone has bought it 😂.

They must be worth something!

The V and A might be interested!

CloudbustingKate · 23/03/2021 15:15

If my country needs me I will answer!

Just had a look at V&A website ArseInTheCoOpWindow, blimey you are right! Crazy. They have half a dozen corsets, mine are more plain, probably not of interest but still. One of them was in a box with Christmas decorations. Wish I had kept my full length black wool Boy coat with all the straps. I used to watch a lot of Dick Turpin as a child and loved that coat. I remember buying it in a pit of a shop on the Kings Road, must have been around 1987. This is making me feel old, I am old!

Boy! Wow l remember them, they were great! I had a pair of shorts by them.

I am also old. Not sure an Xmas decoration box is the best place to store a Westwood corset though!

I had a red jacket by her. It had black velvet lapels that formed a black heart shape when it was fastened.😍

CloudbustingKate · 23/03/2021 15:56

Found it, another museum piece now. It was called the Love Jacket, 1991. Gorgeous.

I'm an 80s girl and I can say, with fair certainty, that's there's no Alaia or Vivienne Westwood in my attic Grin

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/03/2021 16:06

Same here now.

Bloody wish there was though!

Craftycorvid · 23/03/2021 16:22

Great username, OP! Kate B is a goddess (actually, is that you, Kate???). Getting suspicious re the designer corsets!

Sadly, 80s girl though I am, no such treasures lurk in my attic. I miss the style individualism of the era though.

ZaZathecat · 23/03/2021 16:29

I still have relics of the 80s and even 70s, but defo no VW. more likely Chelsea Girl or What She Wants and worth about 2p.

CloudbustingKate · 23/03/2021 16:55

Not Kate, never even saw her perform live sadly. Her music is still so so good isn’t it. She is a one off.

The Alai cost 2 months pay, I must have been on £7,500. The cool beautiful girls in Joseph made me do it. I was so broke afterwards.

I love this!

I still have a blue double breasted hip length jacket, complete with brass buttons and shoulder pads, that I wore in the 80s. Princess Diana used to wear one and I read somewhere that Prince Charles once made a nasty remark about it making her look like an air hostess. I absolutely loved that jacket and although I will never wear it again I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. Probably worth a fiver lol.

CloudbustingKate · 23/03/2021 17:19

ilikebungalows I know exactly the blazer you mean, I had one too. Mine had pointy shoulder pads and it ‘had’ to be worn with blue jeans and a white shirt. A friend lusted after mine and I remember we swapped for it.

And I have a Jaeger blazer just like that! Still wear it from time to time, generally over dresses and with trainers though.

ilikebungalows · 23/03/2021 17:39

@CloudbustingKate I used to wear mine with a white shirt and a blue pleated short skirt and I probably did look like an air hostess! I thought I looked the bees knees. Happy days.

ilikebungalows · 23/03/2021 17:45

@Craftycorvid I'm wearing mine right now! Oh the memories. Mine was from the Anne Brooks petite range. Still can't bring myself to wear it in public though.

Journeynotdestination · 23/03/2021 17:54

I found my old Jean Paul Gaultier laced skirt and corset jacket not long ago & got a good price on eBay. Almost kept to wear but wasn’t very comfortable even back in the day.

CloudbustingKate · 23/03/2021 18:03

Yeah happy days! The fashion and music was fun. Not a bad time to be 20.

@ilikebungalows. Wear it with pride Grin. I definitely wear my 80s things in public - think the trick is to wear them with something more contemporary or it can look slightly fancy dress (and if that’s anyone’s bag, crack on and enjoy! I love seeing people who enjoy what they are wearing, whatever it is).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/03/2021 18:58

I don’t have any of my stuff left. But l was looking at this photo of me. And l had on a cotton corded jacket from Next. It cost £80.00.

And Next now🙀

I used to make all my own stuff then.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/03/2021 18:59

It was taken in 1988

Craftycorvid · 23/03/2021 19:26

Next used to be a bit special - you bought your ‘good’ work outfits there and a few ‘going out’ things. I had a bodycon dress in a lovely dark red colour that buttoned up the back. Next now is unrecognisable!
