Has Anyone Shopped with Harristweedshop.com?

I've seen a coat which looks great, handmade in Scotland with a beautiful selection of tweeds. I'm looking at the Pembroke in Harris Tweed Barley Twist in Murdo. I have super long arms and they have options to customise length.

The only downside is their website is a bit rubbish with only one photo. I'm sure quality will be great not sure about the fit.

No I haven't but I'd contact them and ask for more photos and more information.

ZaraW · 22/03/2021 06:37

Great idea, thanks will contact them.

No though I've looked into it but I got a bit bamboozled after realising there were several companies making and selling the cloth / clothing. In the end I decided I'd rather go there for a holiday sometime, do a tour of them all and see the fabrics and all the colours for real before making a choice. But obviously that probably can't happen for a while.

I think contacting them and asking for more info is a good idea plus it'll also give you a sense of what their customer service is like.

Sorry that's not enormously helpful but I love Harris Tweed and I'm very excited for you! If you do order I'd love to hear how you get on.

Floisme thanks. A holiday in the Highlands would be amazing..... I've requested some samples and I'll email them for further photos. I didn't realise they need 12 weeks for custom orders.

I'm planning to place an order in summer so get it in time for autumn/winter.

I think Harris Tweed is a cottage industry with the cloth being made on the crofts, hence a sort of coperative to sell.. I've been browsing all the Scottish clothing sites this week and the quality and prices of cashmere and fairisle knitwear is amazing compared to English fashion websites. It is all modelled by sturdy ladies who are not in their 20's so you have to use our imagination about how it will look worn in a more up to date way. Even on the very sedate House of Bruar there are some lovely things that just need wearing with the right nootes etc. to be utterly wonderful.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 15:09

House of Bruar has lots of nice things. Some of the styling seems to be aimed at the international market perhaps?

I have bought stuff from there for my mum.

What's wrong in showing them on sturdy ladies not in their 20s?
How many slender 20 yr old women will be shopping for genuine Harris Tweed coats and Fairisle cardigans?

Did you miss the thread with 'And this is what it will look like on you Janet' on it?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 24/03/2021 15:10

We had a suite made from Harris Tweed. Lasted donkeys years...

ExConstance · 24/03/2021 16:13

KirstenBlest - i think it's great it is not modelled by the young and cool type model, "Janet" presumably wants value for money and so do I. There is a cardigan on the site which is the same as one Plumo were offering last year. The Plumo styling of the cardi was very high fashion but the price was about 75% more.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 16:42

@ExConstance. It's very nice. I like traditional clothing. I haven't the budget, but quality costs but lasts.

i'm not a model, not sure if I am small and I'm not 5'9.

Any recommended sites?

ZaraW · 24/03/2021 16:44

I don't care who is modelling but if I'm paying in the region of £600 pounds for a coat some decent photos would be nice. They do it for the long coat but not the one I'm interested in.

I'm also thinking of buying material to recover the sofa.

If I was looking for a fairisle I'd want one from Fair Isle. Kilt made with proper tartan not any old check (although I have punky tartan trousers that are well dodgy and I;m not sure that my scotch plaid skirt is genuine scottish Sainsbury tartan)

Darklane · 24/03/2021 16:53

A lot of the factories up there have outlet shops.
We tour Scotland a lot in out motorhome+dogs & I’ve picked up some terrific bargains from the outlets.
