Please suggest some places I should start getting clothes from!

I’m increasingly disappointed with the clothes I buy from the following places:

Next - don’t fit very well and can be a bit, dull. And have started to fall apart after a few washes
ASOS - too ‘trendy’
Top shop/river island - ditto
H&M/New Look et al - not well made and a bit on the cheap side for me.

Where can I get good quality clothing, that doesn’t make me look 20 years older than I am (I’m mid 30s) and also doesn’t make me look like I am trying to relive my youth??

Please help Smile

Jesus just made the mistake of going to the avavav site just before bed. Those boots will haunt my nightmares

Snezcomb · 20/03/2021 22:32

@PursuingProxemicExactitude

have you seen ... I hadn't! Thank you, Snezcomb, what a glorious find.

Are you a La Fetiche fan? More town / term time rather than holiday-ish. I've just bought a thing or two from their A/W 21/22 pre-season shop (not available any more) having loved last winter's collection. Their summer stock is wondrously directional.

(It's taken me a looooong time to get over my long-ago City wardrobe. Think I'm hitting my stride now.)

Love La Fetiche! Thank you. Might have to wait til payday though!
MumUndone · 20/03/2021 22:40

Avavav, WTF??

AmberItsACertainty · 20/03/2021 22:47

ohthejoysoftoddler I'm too scared to look!

Oh my word... Grin

On a more serious note: I'm still brazenly insisting that Joe Brown's are nice.

I agree with Joe Browns, if you choose carefully. There's definitely some that needs to be avoided.

It's the only brand I've found that always fits me perfectly. I did wonder if someone had set them up especially for me as they fit so well.

Zebracat · 20/03/2021 23:09

Blimey. And 900 Euros.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 20/03/2021 23:15

What the hell is Avavav about? Why are those boots there? I genuinely think they'll be in my nightmare tonight. Disgusting.

Chihuahuacat · 20/03/2021 23:20

Zara
Mango
Massimo duitti
Some carefully selected M&S
Gap
French connection
River island (again( carefully selected, can be a bit young)
&other stories
Uniqlo
Whistles
Mint velvet

PurpleDaisies · 20/03/2021 23:24

Avavav. Wow.

cravingthelook · 20/03/2021 23:31

Avavav looks like a cross between prison and zombie wear.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 21/03/2021 05:43

These are two blouses that I missed out on from Avavav at the end of last year. Because the brand was new to me I hesitated, until there were none of the first left but XS and none at all of the second. I should have been more nimble!

Must say, the reusing of deadstock does seem a way forward. I suspect a fair few brands are suddenly finding that the financial reality of lockdown (and no one buying anything but home clothes) accords beautifully with their newly impeccable environmental aims.

I knew I shouldn't after the comments above, but clicked on the Avavav anyway.

WTF???

It actually made me feel slightly sick.

AwkwardSquad · 21/03/2021 06:21

Those Avavav boots are performance art, I love them - gave me a bit of a Leigh Bowery frisson 😁

Depending on your budget, this place has lovely things, v good quality shoptreen.com/

Maireas · 21/03/2021 06:45

Has anyone else bought from Horror Vacui? They have some lovely fabrics but it errs on the side of a bit frilly and flouncy for me.

Divebar2021 · 21/03/2021 06:59

I like Arket & Cos a lot. You might like & Other Stories more although they’re all part and parcel of the same group. French brand Comptoir de Cottoniers ( no idea on the spelling) are definitely worth a look.

Divebar2021 · 21/03/2021 07:03

It’s really hard to look at Avavav dispassionately when they sell boots that make you look like a burns victim or a massive frog.

DoubleTweenQueen · 21/03/2021 07:18

I don't think anyone's mentioned Jigsaw yet. They have some stylish stuff and lots of natural fibres. Much better quality than Mint Velvet or Hush. Seem to have a permanent sale on lately - am a bit worried about its future, but it's a favourite of mine so a bit invested.

JingsMahBucket · 21/03/2021 07:27

Thanks to whomever mentioned Baukjen. There are a couple pieces there I like and prices seem alright.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 21/03/2021 07:30

Have you tried Meadows Maireas? Similar-ish look but all much more low key English countryside rather than power lunch.

Or Cawley Studio - extravagantly crunchy.

Alternatively you might like Marques Almeida. Less cute, more swagger.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/03/2021 07:32

I’ve re-discovered eBay and it hits the spot for price and quality. Obviously not ultra-fashionable but it works for me.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 21/03/2021 07:35

If you can get past those boots on avavav to look at the rest of it, i salute you.

Sammysquiz · 21/03/2021 07:42

I like Sosander, Woolovers, Uniqlo, and Boden

borntobequiet · 21/03/2021 07:45

I buy stuff from ASOS and I’m decades older than you. Buy things you like from anywhere. Even M&S.

GCAcademic · 21/03/2021 07:45

I went on the Avavav website to see what the fuss was about the boots, I mean how bad can boots really be?

Now I know.
