Hi, does anyone know anything about hallmarks, my gran has left me a very pretty ring which I always assumed was costume like most of her other jewellery but it has a hallmark and I'm just interested in it as I know she didn't get it from my grandad. Thanks

There is a date letter, something that indicates what metal it is and a picture for the assay office that marked it. There can be a makers Mark too.

SoupDragon · 16/03/2021 18:08

What is on it?

It's easy to do, you can google the symbols for the years and assay offices, I did it with a ring I was left by a great aunt

Thanks all, I've attached a picture, from Google i think it says CL &S and 375 which seems to mean 9cgold can anyone make out the mark next to it which I think is the area. Does anyone know if I can clean it up to see more?

I guess the last mark is the assay office but I can't work out which one from google.

Your best bet is to take it to a small jewellers when they're open again.

I've managed to look at hallmarks on my inherited rings with a small magnifying glass before.

Op I'm pretty sure the 375 mark means it is 9 carat gold.

Geppili · 16/03/2021 22:50

Can we see the front of the ring?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/03/2021 23:07

It's 9ct gold, the maker could be Charles Lyster & son. I can't make out the two stamps on the right which are probably the assay office and date stamp. Can you see what they are?
