'Upstyling' a grown out bob

I'm used to a chin length bob. For obvious reasons it's now almost down to my shoulders and a month to go to my hair appointment.
At least it is long enough now to tie back, but that's a bit boring.
I'd like to use the next few weeks to experiment; particularly with more glamorous styles for when we can have a social life again. If I can master better styling my own hair, I might keep it a little longer if it opens up more workable options for me.
I've always had very short hair or the Bob where there have been very limited options so I'm a novice when it comes to styling. I do have straighteners and. curling wand which a friend passed on when she received better versions for Christmas. I have a fringe which I will keep as face looks too long without. I have been chipping at it during lockdown so it's eyebrow length.

I would appreciate any suggestions, if possible with step by step instructions and. pictures of roughly what end result should look like.
Thank you !

Youtube? Headbands?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/03/2021 18:40

Thanks @peachypetite
I look ridiculous in headbands. I did have a quick look at YouTube before posting initially, but the beauty of MN often is that people tell you what they do, so can say how manageable it is for someone that's not very practised at doing more than blow drying a Bob or pixie cut.
Will have another look.

Take a look at Milabu on YouTube she does loads with her short/shoulder length hair.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/03/2021 08:42

Thank you @Tryingtogetitright - that's exactly what I was after, something very straightforward and achievable! I've just watched 5 most used hairstyles and could manage these.
My hair is a bit shorter thank hers in that video, probably just below the neck of her sweater, but I like her explanations and will look up her other videos. Thanks again

Can you use your straighteners to create waves in your hair?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/03/2021 10:20

@poppet131 thank you - will definitely give that a go! First time I've ever had hair to do anything with hence being clueless and appreciate the pointers!

Following this, I am in the same boat with my hair. Probably going to get a fringe cut in when I can and keep the rest of my hair about collarbone length I think.

What hair type do you have OP? Mine is very fine and doesn't hold style well. Definitely going to watch a few of these YouTube videos.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/03/2021 10:30

My hair sounds exactly like yours @waitingforsun.

@waitingforsun this this ponytail' tip sounds good for hair like ours. Also both this and the last video shows how to pull bits out to add volume.

@RockingMyFiftiesNot that looks great! I would love a ponytail to look like that on my hair!

This is the cut I'm aiming for after lockdown (except I'm blonde). I think a lot of these tips will work with it, hopefully!

@waitingforsun I love that! I'm wanting to experiment with styling tips to decide whether I go back to a shorter bob or keep some length so I can do more with it.

It is amazing what a difference even seemingly small tips make. I've managed that ponytail and it is definitely prettier than just scraping it all back into one limp pony.

Love that ponytail video! Thank you OP!

waitingforsun · 17/03/2021 18:09

@RockingMyFiftiesNot well done! 😁 Glad to know its achievable!

I'm going to watch these later when the little one is in bed.

I've got a wedding to go to in July so they will definitely come in handy for that. I never know what to do with my hair for weddings and things.

Tryingtogetitright · 18/03/2021 10:39

I've just copied the ponytail video! Oh my goodness it's amazing! Was so quick and my hair actually looks nice rather than looking like it's just been scragged back, even though there's hardly any more effort involved!

My hair is a similar texture - quite a bit of it but very fine strands and not much oomph to a ponytail usually!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/03/2021 10:45

Glad it worked for you @Tryingtogetitright

These are exactly the kinds of tips I was hoping this thread would help us find!

(Anyone reading this with lovely thick hair will have no idea how much joy it brings to thin haired people to have a half-way decent looking pony! )
