Do you tip after a haircut? How much?

I've always wondered what is polite and what is the right thing to do? I'm always a bit awkward about giving tips and never know how to..

No. This isn't America! Why are you tipping?

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 14/03/2021 10:54

Yes. £10

ElderMillennial · 14/03/2021 10:55

I always used to tip about £5 on top of a haircut costing about £20-25 but I haven't more recently tbh

ElderMillennial · 14/03/2021 10:56

I had a hairdresser that I liked and I was happy to tip her to show my appreciation but I don't have a regular hairdresser now and tk be honest I don't buy into the tipping culture generally unless I think there's a reason for it

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 14/03/2021 10:56

Sorry - I seem v flash thee - that’s if it’s coloured. Tip £5 for a cut - it’s the done thing here but I always wondered why hairdressers and not other things

ChocAuVin · 14/03/2021 10:57

I always do. Usually between £5-10.

Only people I tip in the UK are hairdressers, restaurant servers, and taxi drivers.

cheerfulpanda · 14/03/2021 10:58

At Christmas time I’ll tip around £20 but not throughout the year.

At the salon I go to, I pay for my services by card, but any staff tips have to be cash which on a basic level is just really inconvenient to have to think about every visit.

Bubbles1st · 14/03/2021 10:59

Just a couple of pound I usually round it up

takethedeviledeggs · 14/03/2021 10:59

I usually tip a tenner and my cut and colour is about £100. Hairdressers don't get paid great wages and I really like my stylist.

minchinfin · 14/03/2021 11:00

I don't. the cost of the haircut should be figured into their salary costs etc imo. Hairdressers aren't waiting staff on minimum wage, they are trained professionals.

Reinventinganna · 14/03/2021 11:02

Either £5 or round it up to the nearest ten, which ever is more.
I love my hairdresser and want to show her that I appreciate her.

XiCi · 14/03/2021 11:07

Yes, usually about a fiver

No. This isn't America! Why are you tipping?
Tipping is pretty much a worldwide custom. Bizarre that you think people in the UK don't tip.

LongIslandIcedT · 14/03/2021 11:07

No, I've never tipped a hairdresser. I've now got a great hairdresser who runs her own salon, my "tip" is me now being a regular customer, I go every month without fail.

CrabPuff · 14/03/2021 11:09

10% of whatever I have done.

HeartZone · 14/03/2021 11:10

I sometimes do and sometimes don’t but certainly will be for the first couple of cuts and colours following lockdown as they have missed out massively.

kowari · 14/03/2021 11:12

No, I pay for the service already, if they want more then they need to charge more.

SpeckledyHen · 14/03/2021 11:14

No because mineus the salon owner . In the past I always tipped 10% of the bill .

cingolimama · 14/03/2021 11:17

Yes, about 10%, plus a couple of pounds for whoever washes my hair.

middleager · 14/03/2021 11:17

I tipped a fiver last time for cut and highlights, but usually, pre pandemic, it is a couple of quid.

lifehack · 14/03/2021 11:19

Occasionally but tbh I don't carry change with me often and I also spend a lot already on my hair.

annonnymous · 14/03/2021 11:23

I give 10%. I cringe every time, but I would too if I didn't

Moirarose2021 · 14/03/2021 11:23

Tip £10, they do a good job and since I've moved hairdressers from a city to a town, my hair costs £20 less than it did more than 10 years ago!

AndreaMarteau · 14/03/2021 11:26

No. I'm a regular customer and that's enough. She also probably earns more than I do and it makes me feel like Lady Bountiful throwing crumbs to the servants.

Tipping the hairdresser has come from the practice of tipping the apprentice, who used to wash your hair and probably wasn't earning much money. My hairdresser now does it all, and I don't see why I should tip her and not everybody who does me a service, like the woman on the tills at the supermarket. I already pay her to do her job, I don't know why I should add more on top. If she feels she's not earning enough without tips, she can raise her prices to include it instead.

MuddleMoo · 14/03/2021 11:27

£5 though I gave £10 when I went back for my first one from lockdown

LadyBugg · 14/03/2021 11:27

My cut and colour costs About £42 - £45, I always have a £5 note with me to put in my hairdressers tip jar. I tip about £1.50 - £2 , rounding it up to the next pound in the barbers for my children. I also tip the woman who does my eyebrows £2, the thread and tint costs £15.
